In the park, playing his violin...

August is sitting on a nearby bench reading (and maybe not-so-subtly watching Watson because there's no way August isn't not going to notice a Watson in a park).
thelastgoodone: Clipping from family tree with the name "August Moriarty" and the parenthetical comment "...improbable." (Family tree)

August looks up from his book.

"Oh, I don't know...something by Bach, maybe?"

He's trying to play it off as though he wasn't watching James the whole time. Whether he's sufficiently convincing might be a matter of interpretation.

[OOC: It's admittedly been a while since I did a rewatch of Sanctuary, but I remember loving Watson and Tesla. August would almost certainly be very curious about unexpected Watsons, since, in his universe, Jamie (Charlotte's Watson) and his father are apparently the only Watsons to befriend Holmeses and involve themselves in the massive political/economic/celebrity drama that is the Holmes-Moriarty conflict since the original John Watson. In The Last of August, he very much seems to see Jamie, his loyalty to Charlotte, and excitement about adventure as very much like his own rather naive desire to fix things between everyone.]

August listens, impressed.

"I admit I'm no musician, but I had a friend who played a lot of Bach."

Friend might not be the best description of Charlotte, but it's the closest August has.

[OOC: I really enjoyed how Sanctusry played with the usual questions about immortals. And I've had a thing for immortal Victorians/Edwardians since picking up Kim Newman's books in high school.

That makes sense. We really don't know much about the Watsons in August's world, other than there's a famous (and scandalous) biography of Dr Watson, one of the Watson grandsons sold his share in the Holmes stories to pay gambling debts, and Jamie's dad met Charlotte Holmes's uncle at Oxford.]

"Agreed. I'm a mathematician and I've spent more time around visual artists lately, but it's hard to deny masterworks, regardless of the field or genre."

"Visual artists" apparently now includes August's art thief brother and sister and Milo Holmes's art authentication experts.

[At the end of the first Charlotte Holmes book, we learn that August faked his death to get away from his family and has been secretly working for Charlotte's brother Milo's security and mercenary firm.]

August smiles. He appreciates the irreverence. Milo's people are seemingly chosen to lack a sense of humor, and the artists he knows from various galleries only know him under another name. And, whatever he thinks of his family, his siblings aren't exactly known for their lighthearted approach to things.

"Do you always around discussing artistic value in parks?"

"Are you a violinist, then? I don't believe I've seen you around before."

If he was Charlotte or Milo (or a grifter like his sister), August probably could have deduced James's occupation within moments of meeting him and told him dozens of facts about his life. But his years of trying to convince people he wasn't like the rest of his family--not to mention the relative isolation of working for Milo--have led to him wanting to see what people have to say about themselves. He doesn't necessarily believe them, but he'd rather hear them out and then disagree.

You're very good at that, James.

Would you mind overmuch if I sat and listened?

Thank you. That's very kind. *He takes a seat and listens rather happily.*

*He chuckles.* Plenty of other creatures enjoy art. Elephants have been taught to paint, for example.

You have your upsides, it's true. Not that you'd appreciate a lot of them, eh?

[It took Djem a minute to remember how he knew the guy playing the violin, but once it clicked, he decided to stay a little while longer. He'd been passing time with his sketchbook, drawing whatever he felt like - and now that he'd recognised James, he'd become his next subject. While he couldn't appreciate the music itself, the energy and expression were easy enough to understand.

He did his best not to be really obvious - he didn't want to be distracting and he didn't particularly want to have to show the page off in case it came out terribly.
