"Serenity? Kind of a strange name for a spaceship that looks like a piece of rubbish," Owen gruffly says, and he's going to push a few buttons here. He's not exactly happy about his backpack ending up in Mal's hands.
He snorts, "Now he's got me as an doc. I forgot to tell him, I don't work on the living."
Well he got what he wanted. The cheery face of Kaylee lost a certain amount of that as he called her rubbish. "Jiàn tā de guĭ! Serenity ain't no rubbish. You start calling her that you... kuài qù hĕn yuăn de dìfāng!" She's got her arms folded and glaring at him and next thing he says worries her too.
"We already got a doc, Simon. Much better doctor than you then." She'd have to go check with Mal to see why there was this new doctor on board and did it mean that the Captain had pushed Simon and River off the ship now.
"There's leaky pipes, and I could have sworn I heard a piece of metal come loose. I'm just happy about the fact there's no windows in this rusty death bucket, or I might find an excuse to complain even more," Owen says, without the need to find much more to complain about. He was in space, and he was anything but happy.
The only thing that would make him happy is a brothel, and making this girl upset with picking on her ship. "And, now you have two. Just show me to the infirmary, and I'll be happy to leave you alone."
"There are and zhùzuĭ can't have been." Maybe when she's ditched this guy she can go check, just to make sure like. If Kaylee knew what made him happy she'd find Inara and make sure he was blacklisted from every registered companion. That'd teach him.
"I don't know if I should, Simon spent a long time gettin' it all sorted real good. You don't look much like a doctor either."
"Sorry, love, but I don't speak Mandarin," Owen complains about the sudden change in dialect. Of course, he's not sure if she speaks cockney, but that's besides the point.
If he only knew about the brothels, Owen might change his song just a little bit. "Alright, so don't show me where it's at!" He thrusts a finger into the air, and he looks all too happy to keep from doing anything resembling work. "Oi! What do you expect a doctor to look like? Some old coot dressed in a white coat? Sorry, we're a bit more contemporary in the 21st century."
"You can't, oh." Well he should have at least got before she was swearing at him for what he said about Serenity.
"Simon always looks smart, makes an effort." That also made him stick out a mile but that's how Kaylee reckoned doctors should look. "Respectable like." She doesn't realise she's smiling despite his attitude. "So what is your name, can't just go callin' you doctor."
"No, I cannot!" Owen places his hands on his hips, and he taps his foot on the metal grate. "You don't happen to have a translator anywhere." He knows he doesn't exactly deserve one for being a total wanker.
"Fttf, looking smart?" Owen looks himself over, a leather jacket, an English football shirt, and a pair of black jeans was normal. "I look smart, I was going to watch a footie match at the local pub." It's when she asks him his name; he finally looks back up at her. "Dr. Owen Harper."
"I'll leave it to my imagination, thanks," Owen told her, and he knew there was a likely chance she was cursing him out. He was familiar with the technique that many used in Cardiff when he would just shove people out of the way to get to a scene.
Soon it dawns on him; football might not exist in the seemingly near future. A look of pure horror forms on Owen's face. "You don't know what football is? Please, just let me have just this one shimmer of hope." It didn't seem to matter that she just introduced herself to him; there was one of those important things to skip out of work that matters most at stake here.
She smiled at him and thought of a few other phrases that he wouldn't be able to translate.
"Football, oh! Not so much out here, heard about it from some of the core planets but out here on the rim..." She shook her head. "Don't get a whole lot of anything on some rocks out here."
Owen was wandering the halls of Serenity; it wasn't long until he found the small infirmary. He won't admit to liking the small room, it was close to what he had in the HUB.
Still, he didn't stick around long enough, and he found himself coming across someone else. "Bunkmates?" Owen abruptly asks, and he seems anything but happy about the news. "Dr. Owen Harper, blahblahblah, happy to meet you."
"I take it 'The Rim' is where we're at," Owen asks, and he knows the answer to that question. "Bollocks!" He curses aloud, and he hangs his head down in shame. "Complete, and utter bollocks. I thought football would survive anything."
He will eventually mope around the ship about this discovery, but there might be some hope. "Okay, what about beer? Did beer survive mankind's willingness to go where no man has gone before?"
Owen hardly looks amused, but then again the doctor normally was a cranky ass. "Well, I don't find the idea to be cute. Just make sure to keep to the corner, and we'll just be fine." He might just literally stick Seamus in the corner, and claim the rest of the small room for himself.
Seamus stood there for a moment, dumbstruck, as his brain began to quickly put the pieces together. Ms.Kaylee had mentioned to him that the new doctor had treated her poorly and even called the ship rubbish...and after spending a few brief moments with the jackass, Seamus was positive that he had found the guy.
With a sigh the little man looked back up at his room mate and simply nodded his head. Seamus really wished to avoid confrontation, and while he could suffer being belittled there was no way in hell he was going to allow anyone to treat Kaylee with such disrespect...so Seamus quickly drew his gauss pistol from his holster and leveled it at his room mate's head.
"I think we got off on the wrong freaking foot, so let me reintroduce myself...hello there! My name is Seamus Zelazny Harper, and you are my room mate. Now that the proper introductions are over l have two simple requests...firstly we avoid each other as much as possible! I'll work my schedule around so we are on opposite shift and the few times we do have to see each, well, a polite nod of recognition will suffice. Secondly...and by far the most important request, if you EVER say another unkind word to Ms.Kaylee...to her, about her, or about her ship...I will kill you in your sleep and make it look like the environmental controls were on the fritz! And i'm willing to bet that if you are such an ass to everyone, like you have been to her and I, I doubt anyone would even give a crap."
Without another word Seamus holstered his pistol and smiled.
"Welp, good talk bud! Now if you'll forgive me there is work that needs doing, and repairs I should see to! Oh, looking forward to seeing you around!"
With a friendly smile Seamus slipped out of the room again.
Owen watches as the shorter man, or well maybe not that much of a shorter man reach for his weapon. He wonders how, the shithead of a captain didn't disarm this bloke. Still, Owen looks impasse at the gun, and having being no stranger to staring death in the eye he looks unphased. "So, you get your jollies by pointing a gun in people's faces for being jerks?" He rolls his eyes, and he slips his holds a hand up into the air. "Just remember one thing, mate, I'm one of the docs on board this piece of shit."
Lowering his hand, he turns around. "You'll be on my table soon enough, and pissing off the doc never works good in anyone's favor." He felt the need to remind him of this one. The medical field was really no different than food service, the idea of pissing off the staff could end badly.
"Yeah..." She's about to tell him more about things he clearly doesn't have a clue about and really should. Things he would need to know to at least have a chance about getting along with someone out there.
At least she can give him a little news. "We still got alcohol. Don't have a lot on board, but we do make do." Same could be said about everything, food too. Kaylee does sometimes have a little something engine distilled.
Seamus paused as he heard the not-so-subtle threat from the doctor and as he listened to the man's words he began to chuckle. Without a word the little man looked back towards his roomie, drew out his knife and quickly slashed his own arm drawing a good deal of blood.
There was no scream of pain or surprise as Seamus simply took out his pocket utility and ran it over the top of his self inflicted wound. Within seconds the nanites sealed the wound and left no trace of any injury aside from the blood still trailing to the ground. Finished with his game of show and tell Seamus tossed a wink and a smile back at the other man.
"Yeah...as if I'd need the help of someone with such primitive healing skills...may as well be using freaking leeches and magic."
The little man's smug smile stay in place as he started to exact the room again.
Owen shows a look of relief when she mentions that there's still alcohol. "Good and not so good, guess we're going to need some more once we land."
"Oh! I'm still looking for the infirmary, your boss didn't exactly show me where it was before he gave me the job." He's still not happy about his place here, but he's not about to chance himself being thrown out an airlock or stuffed in what would be a holding cell.
Owen still isn't impressed with the display, and there's a yawn. "Leeches are in again, and from what Kaylee told me this century is a little backwater."
He's still trying to figure out the 25th century out, some worlds had the cutting edge stuff and this rim is literally the stone age. "At least some of it is from what Kaylee told me, so you might need someone like me."
"If you're nice enough don't have to go waitin' til we're dirtside." She smiled, maybe she could make him be a little less caustic with the promise of alcohol.
She was going to tell him no again, but going to the infirmary meant a chance of seeing Simon. "Alright, I'll show ya th'way. Maybe even see if Simon's there."

Hey bud, Seamus Zelazny Harper at your service! It looks like you and I are assigned bunk mates for this trip.
