[Loki accepts the mortal's offer and takes a sip of the flask. He's never been one to turn down a drink. And if Ragnarok is coming for him, he'll at least go out with one last sip.]
Perhaps it does. But what if it's meant to be that way?
[He doesn't like to remind himself of his fate, but he also knows that there is no way of escape. He's read the Eddas, he knows what's in store for him. He won't lie to himself the way brother Odin does. He's destined to die no matter what.]
[The pale man paused for a moment as he felt another fit approach and with a sad smile he carefully removed a silk handkerchief from his vest and held it to his mouth as the coughing began. It took a moment to regain his composure, and to catch his breath again, but when he finished Doc wiped away the blood on his lips and put the piece of fabric away.]
My apologies dear sir, it seems the weather here is not a boon to my consumption. As we were discussing, if it was such a thing that was meant to be then you would have but two real options left at your disposal.
You could meet it head on with a composed measure of grace and dignity, a truly noble way indeed, or you could be inclined to choose another path...and simply cheat.
[With a slight flourish the man presented his empty hands and smiled as an ivory handled blade and a pair of Queen face cards appeared in his hands as if by magic.]
While I respect the man that wishes to follow the noble path, I myself prefer to...to widen my range of options by any means necessary.
[The trickster god raises his eyebrows at the man, feigning surprise at the cheap magic trick. He has to keep up his mortal guise after all. He wouldn't be the greatest deceiver in Asgard otherwise. From all his dealings with mortals, he's learned to allow them to have their moments of self congratulation. And this man's moments are nearly up, as are Loki's.]
Whatever choice I make, it won't be a noble one, that I assure you. But if I do end up fighting someone is going to end up hurt. Perhaps even die in the process...
[The way he talks about it, it sounds as if the end is getting nearer for him, so much that cheating seems like a viable option. What a spectacle that would be! To confound the Eddas, to defy brother Odin and to free his children and roam the universe untainted. He would be the ultimate trickster afterall].
...If I chose another path, it could all be avoided. But wouldn't it brand me a coward to run away from a battle?
[The cards and blade slipped away again as the Doc considered the man's words and question. It took him a moment to think it through but he smiled faintly as he spoke at last.]
It it quiet a pickle you find yourself in, yet I think it only prudent to play the coward's role if bloodshed could be avoided.
A man may be called a great many things in his time, but remaining alive is how he might change how others perceive him in the future.

My family. They think lying to themselves will save them.

Make no mistake, to deceive ones self is folly but to be drawn into the folly of others weakens all who are involved!

A dead man has no such luxuries.
