[ Carl thumbs through the stack of comics he stole from some kid's bedroom, it ain't like the kid can read anything these days. He reaches for his backpack, and he puts the few titles he hasn't read in with the rest of the supplies he has. ]
It ain't exactly much of collection, I had a better one, but I kinda had to leave it behind. 'Sides I got other things to worry about besides rebuilding my comic book collection.
*She nodded, and reached around for her backpack, pulling out a bag of chocolate covered pretzels she found a while back and tossed it to him. A peace offering, and she also figured it might make this kid's rare moments to catch his breath even more normal.*
I was in Miami for a case when it all went down. Been making my way back to New York ever since. I know it's probably a death trap, but I figure I'd rather die finding out what happened to my family and friends than live not knowing.
You got a group? People you're with?
*As tough as this kid seemed, she didn't want to go off leaving him on his own.*
[ Carl dismisses the offering, when Alex offers him the cookies. He's not exactly that trusting of strangers, and in a world like this one he can't afford to be the trusting kid he once was. ]
You're going to the city. I'd keep away from those; Atlanta has nothing but hordes of walkers. So I'd stay clear of any city 'less you want to end up one, or if want to be devoured.
[ He gives his bit of advice, he'd hate to see any more people become food for those things or to end up one. When she asks him about his group, Carl shrugs. ] Yeah, but we've got enough people. You might wanna look for your own group, cause you ain't gonna make it out there alone.
Thanks. But I know what I'm getting into. Like I said, I'd rather become dinner finding out than wandering aimlessly not knowing.
*She smiled a little at his implications about his group.*
Don't worry, I'm not looking to join up. I've been doing well enough on my own so far, and I figure it wouldn't be fair to drag someone else to their doom along with me. I'm tougher than I look.
I ain't about to stop you, even if I think the idea is a dumb one. [ The whole experience has hardened Carl, it is all about survival and sometimes having to let go to the ones, you love.
He shrugs. ] I know a lot of people who thought that, and it got them killed in the end. If it ain't the walkers, it'll be people lookin' to take what you got. Ain’t no amount of toughness is gonna save you from a group of anything.

That's true. My nephew used to read these. He'd have loved a collection like this.

*She smiled a little. He seemed like a good kid made tough by their circumstances. He reminded her of her nephew.*
I'm Alex. Heading north. And you are?

[ He knows better than to trust most strangers, trusting new people hasn't always panned out well for his group. ]
Name's Carl, and I don't see reason to head anywhere. Though the only good thing I see is that I bet the cold slows'em down some.

It's worked so far. I'm pretty good at staying 'under the radar' so to speak.
