The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson is amazing.

It's several stories within a story but it basically centers around a man who was terribly burned in a car crash and, thinking his life is over because he is ugly, he plans the perfect suicide. However, a woman comes to him in the hospital and builds a friendship with him, claiming they knew one another in another life (or some such). He thinks she's insane, but he's glad for the company and she tells him stories of their life before and of her "friends".
