Tire your brain out before bed. I usually try to save my math homework til before then, that way my brain doesn't want to think anymore and I don't have any bad dreams.
If I do, I just have to remember its in my head and I'm the one in charge of what happens.
I think perhaps some of your respondents here are referring to nightmares, which are not night terrors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_terrors) in the slightest. For one, night terrors include a physical component, and for two they occur when a person is not entirely asleep.
I would try eating before going to bed to keep your blood sugar level up, and also to see a doctor because some antidepressant medications can eliminate or reduce symptoms. You can also try addressing the psychological component if the terror involves a visual component or fear.
As a sufferer of this condition myself, I offer my sympathies.
Definitely do not try the exhaustion or alcohol, as both of those can actually trigger it.
Exhaustion is what tends to make the condition self-perpetuating, in that you are unable to get enough sleep to be fully rested - therefore you are more prone to the night terror, therefore you do not get enough sleep - a vicious cycle.
To explain a bit more about the eating - blood sugar levels tend to drop off while the body is at rest, especially if one has not eaten since dinner many hours prior. Hypoglycemia is thought to be one of the triggers for the physical reaction. Therefore by eating before bed, your body maintains a more even glucose level and hopefully avoids said reaction.
I'm not crazy, despite it sounding like it. You ever want to test my words, meet me in Fortuna sometime. Guaranteed you'll change your mind quickly, pal.

I had them for a few years.

I don't have them so badly and have figured out how to wake myself up from them. It took a lot, though.

And if that doesn't work, there are always those huge, bulky ear protectors.

Can't imagine that you'll hear a lot anymore if you're wearing them.

Thanks, dude. The eating stuff sounds interesting, I'm gonna try that. Not a big fan of shrinks or medication...

Hans Varner, by the way - and you are?

So... if not a biologist, what do you do then?

Unless your "night terrors" are different from mine. Probably are.

Are you a crazy person?

Let's just say I'm from a place where demons exist. So yeah, my "night terrors" are usually patched-up potato sacks with blades for legs.
They don't call me a devil hunter for nothing.

Nevermind. Proving points to people who don't believe you isn't worth my time. Later.
