I can't save them.

Never could.

Who were you trying to save?

Oh, I - I see. I'm sorry to hear it didn't go as you'd have hoped.

Of course.

I understand the regret that comes with not being able to save people - it's practically part of the job description when you're a doctor. Never gets easier.

Well - yes.

I'm primarily an anesthesiologist, so my function is rarely life-or-death, but it can be hard when one gets attached to patients to hear things couldn't be helped. But there are plenty of cases where the patients are able to make full recoveries, and it's gratifying to know that I'm able to help.

Yes, that's very true. A lot of hard work is involved, but in my opinion it's very much worth it.

*a little smile*

Thank you very much.

And you can call me Dakota.

It's nice to meet you too, Janie.
