Punishment or redemption? Your preference please.

((I've noticed something strange about villains in classic stories versus the stories of today. I was just wondering if people generally like to see their villains redeemed or punished for what they've done. Any answers are appreciated))

I'd like to believe anyone can be redeemed.

Sometimes redemption isn't possible. Other times, it isn't deserved.

Punished.

Redemption's nice, but punishment's more believable.
