Punishment or redemption? Your preference please.
((I've noticed something strange about villains in classic stories versus the stories of today. I was just wondering if people generally like to see their villains redeemed or punished for what they've done. Any answers are appreciated))

They also changed the ending of Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera so that the Phantom was more suitably punished.
I guess it's more of a film thing than literature, but in vintage films, they seemed to love seeing the villains punished rather than seeing them try to make up for it)).
