Days turn into years, and you stop having that knee-jerk "I need to tell Jonathan/Maggie/whomever" reaction whenever something interesting happens. You come to acceptance, tinged though it will always be with loss.
You learn to look back and smile instead of cry, at least some of the time.
It gets to the point where you can live without them. It doesn't mean it's easier when you do remember, when you do miss them acutely... But you learn to keep living.
If you're lucky, you fall in love again. It never diminishes the love you've lost, but it makes that ache a little more bearable.

I've loved precisely five men in my long years, Rupert. ...It gets a little easier.
