It's just a style. No different than wide or narrow vertical stripes really. They both serve the same visual purpose.

Stripes have a purpose, those I get. I mean, pinstripes, they have a certain...appeal...uh...especially on, uh... But skinny ties? Is it a tie, is it not? It's like a tie for pubescent boys who haven't quite graduated to man-ties yet.

Awww That's a little harsh. I think most skinny tie styles went out with the 80's but it can make a bold statement on certain suits.
