Not ready to lead the pack...

Neither was I... But you get used to it, I think. So they tell me... I'll let you know.

I'm one of the newest pack members, but when the old alpha died, no one else had the balls to step up and take the job. So it got put on me... It was about as close to a vote as our kind can have, they all stood aside and all but forced me to take charge.

It's been about a month, and the pack has gone though a lot of shit in that time... I'm doing my very best, but I still don't think I'm the right man for the job.

Ah, we don't do things by heredity. I know some packs do, but ours was always a bit of a democracy. On some levels I think I am the right one, I've got a good sense of tactics, I'm level headed, but I'm not exactly the strongest or most powerful, but that's not really important, is it?

You may not feel like you're ready, but from what it sounds like to me, your desire to step in and take over shows me that you are ready. Or very close to ready.

Just take it slow, feel your way into the position, and you'll become comfortable with it. Do the others recognize your authority, or are there ones who question it? Because that can be a huge factor. For some reason, my pack has unquestioning loyalty to me...freaks me right the hell out, to be honest.

Sometimes you have no choice. I understand.

Having people obviously opposed to your position has got to make it harder. I know I'd have a rougher time if my pack wasn't so scared and eager to follow me.

Who's Gabriel? If you don't mind my asking, of course...

Mate in name only? Our last alpha was like that. We had an alpha female, sure, but they were partners in leading, but not in other ways. I have a mate, yes, but she's not a wolf, so not in any leadership position in the pack. My second is a female, but she's not alpha.

I should think about promoting her, she has a good head on her shoulders.

Why not?
