Actually, ruth comes from the Middle English word "reuthe", which meant pity or compassion. It was simplified, and therefore "ruthless," or to be without pity or compassion.

I don't care what people think of me or what I do to get things done. I've... looked the other way for vigilantes because they're the only ones in this town who get things done, even if they don't follow legal procedure. I don't give a damn when some mobst-- excuse me, "alleged" mobster is shot dead in the street...

Where I am, truly good people are hard to come by.
