Servo: And to us it's tons of candy at affordable prices! Crow: Enough sugar to wipe out at least 6 diabetic support groups! Gypsy: We're SO hyper right now.
Crow: Hah! Are you kidding? We can withstand a nuclear blast, repeated gunfire, AND all the movies in the Friday the 13th franchise! Servo: So naturally a sugar rush, and magical auras are a walk in the park!
Harry sobered when it started to sink in that his mother had appeared again, he'd never expected to see her at all, much less again. He tilted his head and looked at her with a mix of emotions in his eyes.
He was still for a moment and then he leaned in for a cautious hug, as if he was afraid she might disappear when he touched her. About a thousand questions ran through his mind, but he really only wanted on answered a this moment. He struggled to keep himself together and fought to keep the childish wibble out of his voice.
"No... I'm afraid not. I'm sorry." At least as far as she knows; she hasn't seen him here. And that hurts, too. Right along there with the sweet sorrow of meeting her son for the first time, years later, and realizing that he, too, is older than she is. And she had so little time with either of them.
Harry exhaled deeply when she answered, which was a little odd because he hadn't even realized he'd been holding his breath. He pursed his lips and nodded. "One parent is way better then none." He said softly, but inside there was an aching disappointment.
He'd daydreamed since he was a child what he would say and what he would do if he could meet his mom. It seemed odd, now that it was really happening that he couldn't think of anything to say.
"We should ..." There was a long pause as he wrestled with the words. "... catch up. If you aren't busy."
She could understand. She'd lived through enough times of loving someone, a friend, family, and then losing them. Having the impossible in your grasp suddenly made all sorts of other things ache, long after you thought you'd gotten used to them.
"I don't even know what I'm doing here," she said, with a tired laugh and a wry gesture that indicated 'here' meant, really, anywhere. Alive. "I have all the time in the world."
"I don't know..." she shook her head slowly, and there was a light to her eyes now that Harry might recognize from a mirror sometimes, if he ever looked in one at the right moment. A determination that could be deadly if she met up with the wrong person who might have done the wrong thing.
"I woke up in a hotel room, that's all I know. I was... as I am now." In a white dress, barefoot, with a silver pentacle and her wedding ring on her finger, a small celtic knotwork ring on her other finger.
"But if it turns out to be nothing sinister, nothing that we need to worry about," she smiled again, and it was only barely edgy. Because the odds of it being nothing to worry about were fairly slim. "I'd love to spend time with you."
Harry listened to his mothers words and he tried to convince himself that this was a mysterious blessing.
It would have been nice to believe that his mother, unjustly taken from him on the night of his birth, was being returned. As if the powers that governed the universe were correcting some sort of horrendous mistake at long last.
But he just couldn't believe that. If there was one life lesson that was drilled into his head at an early age, it was that life wasn't fair ... and the Dresden's often tended to get the short end of the stick.
What was the right answer to that question, Harry wondered. He had no desire to make his mother worry or feel guilty about things that had happened after her death, on the other hand, he couldn't lie. Even if some it wouldn't hurt his magic power, he got the sense that Margaret would see right though a lie.
"I did the best I could with the hand I was dealt." He said after a moment. "It's been rough and ... lonely."
"I'm sorry..." she said, awkwardly, and then trailed off. What did you say to the son you never had a chance to know? All the usual things, the sentiments she surely felt, she didn't have words for. "I should have been there..."
She did reach out, then, brushing her fingertips over his cheek as if to reassure herself that he was real, that she wasn't a dream, nor was he.
"Not so lonely, surely. I see you and Thomas have found each other."
Harry wasn't much for hypotheticals, they had always seemed rather pointless so he didn't think of them much, but what his mother said had got him thinking. What would it have been like if his mother hadn't died when she did. Would she have been able to protect them, if she hadn't died when she did? Would he have been safer? He might have never met Justin ... maybe he would have been a whole different person.
"Everything happens for a reason." He said finally.
He nodded, "I did find Thomas and I have a handful of friends, but Mr. Popularity, I'm definately not."
"People tend to think I'm mouthy. I have to believe it's your side, because Thomas is kind of sarcastic too."

To hear his mother laugh for the first time, even if it was tired sounding was practically musical and he couldn't help but smile.
"I'd really like to be able to spend some time together. I mean ... I never knew you ... but I missed you anyway."

ANYway. "How have you been? How has life... treated you?"
Even from these brief moments, Maggie LeFay could see that her son was battle-scarred and worn down.
