Englishman in the 1800s. Invented the traditional chocolate bar...but ancient Mayans and Aztecs invented the use of cacao as a drink...so technically chocolate's always been around.
Yes. I saw the Mayans mistake the leader of the conquistadores as the returning god Kukulkan. I saw the Spanish reaction to the skull racks, that displayed the skulls of hundreds of sacrificial victims, and call the locals barbarians. I saw the Spanish proceed to kill more people in a few days than the Mayans and Aztecs had sacrificed over centuries.
Men, women, children, entire villages were burned alive for refusing to convert. Beautiful temples were destroyed, and the Mayan codices, the books written on mulberry-bark paper, that contained astonishing mathematical and scientific knowledge along with their religious beliefs, were burned as heathen writings. The local people were tortured, raped, killed, and their homes pillaged, simply for holding true to their faith. And the Spanish did all this in the Name of the Lord, and in the Name of the Son, who preached love.
*looks away, speaking softly* I do not question His Will. If He had His reasons for wishing me to wear the guise of a missionary with the conquistadores, for wishing me to witness all that, then so be it.
In all honesty, it was not the absolute worst thing I have seen. Sodom and Gomorrah, for example. In that case, I was the one who had to destroy two large cities. He may leave blood on His instruments sometimes, but we are still His instruments.
