God helps those who help themselves.

I've always thought that was a rather boldfaced blank cheque for stealing.

Don't tell me you don't have a generous bone in your body.

I can be quite generous for a pretty face, but "helping yourself", isn't that quite the opposite of helping someone else?

On the other hand... far be it from me to blaspheme.

I could be wrong, but I think the 'helping yourself' part refers to a willingness to accept responsibility for the choices you make. One of those 'you break it, you buy it' things.

Perhaps I have a bias in my reading.

Perhaps. It's a good thing to recognize.

Anything more than that, people just might start thinking someone's looking after them.
