...are you knitting, Lieutenant?

*hastily tries to hide it* Who? Me?

[grins and looks over his shoulder to look at it] Could you teach me?

Ummm...sure. Do you have any knitting needles? If not, I have plenty. *pulls out a rectangular case and opens it, revealing every size of knitting needle known to man*

I have never knitted before! [stares at his needle collection in awe]

Okay...we'll do something simple to start with...a scarf. What color of yarn do you want?

[intrigued by this new development in Riley!] Red! It is my favorite.

Okay. *fishes around in his bag and produces a big ball of red yarn* First, we'll practice casting on. That's how you get the yarn onto the needle.

[holds the yarn excitedly, tangling it a little as she unwinds it from the ball] Okay!

*chuckles a little and gets the yarn straightened out* Okay. Take the yarn and loop it over your thumb and first finger. Leave a long tail for yourself. *holds his hand out so she can see*

[nods and watches eagerly, then tries to do it herself--less tangling, but not much less]

*reaches over and puts her hand into the correct position and and untangles the yarn again* Okay. You take your needle and pull the yarn over and under, like so. *guides her hand until she has a loop on the needle*

[nods excitedly and follows his lead, squealing in delight when it's looped] It worked!

*grins at her* Yep! You cast on your first stitch. *finds himself thinking she's really pretty, then finds something else for his eyes to focus on* Okay. I'm going to guide you through the second one and then we'll see if you can do the third one on your own.

....Knitting.

Yes. Insult it, and I will stab you with one of my double pointed needles.

Woah there, no insult meant, lieutenant.

Though if you do start stabbing people, I'm gonna have to have an issue.

I usually don't stab people. Who wants blood all over something they've worked on? *finishes the hat and eyes the doctor* You want a hat?

...It's a hat?

[he's kidding... possibly...]

Yep. And I even left the ear flaps off of it. I could always add a nice bobble on top if you want. *smirks*

Trust me, I wouldn't inflict a bobble hat on you. Jim, maybe. But then again, I've got an elf hat I'm knitting him for Christmas. Anyway, this'll keep your ears warm. *hands the doctor the surprisingly well knitted blue hat*

Oh, Jim'd look great with a bobble. [grins]

[...huh.] Well. Thank you. [he appreciates it, even if he probably won't be needing it much on New Vulcan. But Saval would probably love it for the occasional Earth visit.]
