What were they instructing you to do, if I may ask?

[reads from the project's gauge instructions] "When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles."

[looks at him] I crocheted a swatch with the recommended hook and it was too small. So I went out and got a bigger crochet hook and did another one. And it's still too small. [facepalms, crinkling the paper in her hand a little] I wanna be able to wear these socks, not give them away like the last six pairs I knitted...
