*She carefully practices her watercolor painting.*

[Barely listening to what she's saying.] I don't want to get the hang of it. I just want the 'it' to stop!

[Stares blankly at that last statement though.] ...What?

*Katsumi shuts up, she knows when to be quiet. Letting the wide of her sleeve fall open she reaches into the depths and pulls out a small gray rabbit by the nape of its neck. The rabbit is actually alive. How, well, lets not ask questions.*

[Stares for a beat, wordless.

And then finally, out of lack of anything else to do in response, claps in applause.]

*Setting the bunny down, she reaches back into her sleeve and starts to pull out a long chain of rainbow colored silks knotted together at the end.*

[Head tilts to the side.]

...You know. Out of all the things I would've thought you could do, I didn't really expect magic tricks to be one of them.

*Ducking her head she blushes a little and hurriedly begins stuffing the scarfs back up her sleeve.*

I have time, I used to entertain.

Wait - used to? Before...before you were...?

Dead. *Reconsiders.* Death, not dead.

...I didn't know that you used to be, well, anything. That there even was a before.

Of course there was! I inherited this job, against my will which should be noted, back in 1945.

So, what you used to be...you used to be human? You can inherit being death? How? I mean, if you're drafted for it, then how are you picked? I gotta tell ya, this is all blowing my mind here. I had no idea.

Yes, I had a family. *And Katsumi shrugs slowly, helplessly without an answer for her questions.* I do not know why I was picked, how the choice was made.

You...wow.

But who was Death before you? What happened to them?

A man, his name was Joshua. I took on his memories, his duties and in exchanged he got to passover.

Well I guess that makes sense. But still...

I...I really don't even know what to say. I guess when I met you and I found out you were death and I just assumed -- you know. That you were death. Always and had been. I didn't even think you might've normal once. That you might've had a life.

*Toying with the paintbrush in her hands her fingers tighten and snaps the brush in half.*

It does not matter, Justine.

[Stares at the brush.]

Did I say something wrong?

*Quickly hides the remains in her sleeves.*

No, no, it is not you. I am sorry that was an extreme outburst, forgive me.

I do not like thinking about what I have lost, what I will never have. It is something I must get over. You were asking questions, perfectly reasonable questions.

I'm the one who brought it up in the first place. And then kept pushing, not realizing it might be a...sensitive issue, for you.
