One year. Happy birthday to me.

[Laughs.] Today -- today, I am one year old! [She holds up her index finger.]

...I don't get it. [tilts his head]

It is . . . not a joke. The other one. [Thinks a second.] A riddle! It is a riddle.

I come here one year ago today, and I said, "I am a new person now." So. Today, that new person is one year old.

Ohhh... I like that! What happened a year ago? I mean. To make you change.

Mmm. It is . . . very long story. I left behind the life I was raised in, and the place I came from, and I came here to start over. To have better chance at being free and being my own person. New job, new home, new name, new life. New person.

That's a really amazing accomplishment, that you should savor. I'm going to make you something for your one-year! [smiles warmly]

I.. did a similar thing. But it was the coming back home, back to reality, that ultimately caused the change. I was escaping rather than starting fresh.

[She smiles and ducks her head shyly.] It is very kind, but you do not have to feel an obligation. Thank you.

[nodding] So instead you are trying to face reality? That is another way of being a new person.

I don't! I just want to.

Yeah.. I hope so. Things have been difficult lately, but real. And that's good, even when it sucks- you know?

Yes! Yes, I know. Even if things are painful, or unfair, or difficult -- it is still your own life that you are living. That is what makes the difference, what makes it so that life is good even when things are not good. Yes?

Yes, precisely, sweetheart. What's your favorite color?

Oh, blue. Blue like the ocean. I never saw an ocean until a year ago. What is yours?

Really? That's sad! I'm glad you got your chance, I grew up by the water.

I'm rather fond of pink.. like strawberries. It reminds me of summer sunsets.
