D'you consider affairs while undercover, cheating?

[Nods once.]

Well, that is a very level-headed way to look at it. I'm sure your partner would appreciate your understanding.

[Laughs.] Don't count on it.

Well, if I were her, I would appreciate it. Especially if I were feeling a lot of guilt over what I had to do.

Lots of women like men to be wrong, even when they're right. [After a pause.] This askin' from experience, or are you just curious?

[He doesn't appear to be someone who would know anyone that she does, so she figures it's safe to tell him.]

Both.

You haven't had a chance to tell him, then? You must be worried how he'd react. [And then, after thinking it over.] Or, well, I'm assuming it's a "he" in question here.

[She huffs out a laugh.]

Yeah. It's a he.

And I'm a little concerned about how he'll react, although I'm not sure I'd even be able to tell him about it.

[He nods.] So, does worryin' about it now help? I would think you'd want to refrain from worryin' yourself until you knew whether you had to tell him or not.

No. I suppose it doesn't. But I still have to live with the guilt.

[Guilt from the multiple repercussions of what she's doing.]

[Frowns.] Does it make sense to feel guilty over somethin' you had no control over? Could you have refused the... mission, or whatever it was?

[Shakes her head.]

Not exactly. [In fact, she's the only person in two universes who could do this mission.] But I could have chosen to play the part differently maybe. I could have found another way to earn his trust.

That sounds more like regret than guilt.

I don't really regret it because so far it's working.

But I feel guilty for having to resort to it.

That's a shame. It's hard to be put into situations like that. [And he's not so sure he's being much help, on top of that.] Wish there was somethin' I could say to make it all easier.

[Shrugs.]

I don't expect that. I wouldn't be in the position I'm in if I expected everything to be easy. I know I have an important mission and I'm going to complete it no matter what.

Good for you! [It's a great philosophy -- one he very much agrees with and abides by... usually to a fault.]

I guess I just have to suck it up.
