[At his desk. Reading Sherlock Holmes]

[Jackie decided to cash in her vacation time and give Hawaii a try....and since Shawn, her cousin, begged for him to come too, she was going to have to put up with some time spent at the police station]
[it's there that she recognizes the face behind a book and comes over to say hi]

Aloha.

[Steve glances up from his book] Aloha, haole. Welcome to Hawaii. What made you come west?

Oh, some guy said it was better than Cali, so I had to come see if it was true. [grins] Though I'm afraid "aloha" is all I know right now, haven't been able to pick up any more words since I got here. [nods to his book] Detective work at it's finest. Is that required reading here?

One you'll probably hear the most is haole, which means "white person" usually. Foreigner. [He chuckled, bookmarking his spot and setting the book down] We had some down time and we rarely, if ever, get down time. Thought I'd catch up on some reading.

[she trips over the word a few times, trying to get it right...and then rolls her eyes at the meaning] Or tourist, more like it. I guess I can live with that.
Great choice of book, I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes myself. That and I've got a cousin who plays detective all the time.

Sherlock was my favorite detective as a kid. I haven't read a book in ages but this was on my dad's desk in his office. Thought I'd give it a go.

Sounds like a plan. But how can you stay inside when it's gorgeous out?? Or do you get immune to sun living here?

So I'm going grocery shopping, what do you want me to get?

This is all for you, sweetie, I've already got what I need. I'm not going to eat this. Milk, bagels, steak. Anything else?

I know, that's why I thought I'd offer. Man, you should see the looks people are giving me.

Hah. You will eat nutritious food while I live under your roof, McGarrett. I am a nurse, after all. Oh, just because I'm carrying this overflowing basket like it's nbd and I have a case of TruBlood under one arm. Most people don't combine the two shopping experiences.
