I don't know. I had a fairly idyllic one - or, at least, my brain's been sweet enough to edit out most of the bad bits - but, nowadays, seems like every kid I know has the weight of the world on their wee shoulders. Lester, Will and Eoghan, my own daughter...
I remember bits and pieces of my childhood. It was just as happy as any other. I've met Lester, sometimes I think people forget he's a child but I think he does himself.
[He stops just after the 'daughter's out, and wriggles.] Well - you know about Ash. [Um. It's entirely possible he thinks he's speaking to someone he isn't.]
Lester, yeah. I think he really does, and then comes up hard against that.
I dunno. So innocence is hugely subjective anyway, and what's damaging for one kid another's gonna take in their stride, but... just. Wishing they could be kept safer for a little longer, is all.
Not really, sorry. I mostly stayed in the background and kept my nose clean and hung out with a lot of good people instead, but am pretty sure they knew my name. My brother got all the fireworks and attention. He liked it, though. Even negative attention - s'better than nothing. You remind me a little of him in that way.
*He sighs* I meant that kind of . . . literally. Like the bit in Romeo and Juliet where Juliet panics when she hears her mother wants to talk to her, if you remember that. I was at boarding school so much of the time that I could never quite be comfortable around my parents.
I don't think they loved me. They didn't know me well enough for that.
