That's good advice. How come you've been around long?

Not human anymore, either, and I'm still not real happy about it. It has its advantages, but still--I never realized I looked forward to turning into a little, cranky old lady until I couldn't.

Yeah, I don't feel your particular pain, but there's plenty of times I wish I was still human, too. Being human's just...easier.

As long as I didn't have to go back to my family I'd gladly be human again

Are they why you had to sneak out in the first place?

I guess. I mean, there's no way my daddy would've let me out if I'd asked so I had to sneak.

Both. My daddy used to hit me if I weren't makin' the right grades or doin' chores.

The more I hear about real parents, the more overrated I think they are. At least he can't hurt you now, right?

No, I tried to kill him once but my maker stopped me an' then glamoured my family to make 'em forget I ever went back. Don't you got real parents?

Why'd he stop you? If he'd make some unsuspecting woman a vampire, why would he care if you killed your dad?

*She shakes her head.* Mama died when I was little, so I don't remember her very well, and my father...yeah. I never even met him until I was fourteen. Had a good foster-mother, though. Was your mama okay, even if your dad's not?

That just ain't how things are done. He only made me 'cause he killed another vampire an' had to even the score or whatever. I guess he thoughts he was savin' me from regret or somethin'.

I'm sorry about your mama. Mine was okay, she spent more time with my little sister than she did with me.

Wouldn't expect somebody who'd killed like that to have a conscience. Probably a good thing, though, if you think about it. I mean, would you have regretted it, if you'd done it?

I got lucky, since at least I had my foster-mother. She had a lot of other foster-kids, too, but she was a good mama. Did yours try to keep your dad from hitting you, ever?

Yeah I woulda regretted it. My mother just kinda pretended my dad was a good guy, you know?

Where's your foster mom now?

She didn't want to see the bad stuff, kind of a thing?

She's...back home. She's still raising younger kids--I've got a hell of a lot of foster-siblings. I get back to see them when I can.

Yeah, I wish I could go more often, but even every now and again is nice. Except you don't realize how fast humans age, until you don't anymore.

Yeah, mostly. I started out mostly human myself, a long time ago. Seen a lot of 'em grow up and move on. I dunno how Jary can handle it, watching 'em grow old and die over and over.

It's over now, that's what counts.
