I know when you've been bad or good. Of course, I check my list twice, just to be sure, but most children know in their hearts whether they have been truly Nice or Naughty.

That doesn't seem very fair, for you to decide. Your idea of nice and mine could be quite different.

How do you know when you've been bad or good?

I try to be good all the time. I clean out my volcanoes, and I take good care of my flower, even when she is very rude to me. But I met a man who, his whole life, all he did was light and put out the same lamp, over and over again. And I thought it was very strange, but he thought he was being good. So I ought not judge him on my own ideas of goodness or badness.

But why would you pick them? That would hurt them very much, I should think.

So picking flowers is always bad?

I think you ought to ask them, first. Otherwise it's rather rude, at the very least. You wouldn't like if someone picked you without your permission, would you?

If you know which things are always bad, no matter who you are, and you try not to do them, then you will know that you have been Nice.
