Emily found herself laughing at her friend's question and shook her head. "Oh, do I wish. That would be the best present ever to go with the best day. But I meant the fact that I'm back here with everyone, and not only that, there's no case."
Dani gave Emily a fake pout, and sighed before taking a drink of her beer. "Get my hopes up, why don't you,": she said with a laugh. "But, it's nice to have you back. And it's extra nice that my phone hasn't gone off with a message saying I'm needed at the office."
"I'm sorry. Although I'm sure one of these days, she will be. And then we can really celebrate."
Of course, it wasn't exactly a good thing to be hoping for the firing of a colleague, though Emily used that term in the loosest sense possible, but when it came to Abby Corrigan, the sooner she was gone, the better, really. She couldn't even count the number of cases the other woman had nearly screwed up, and yet, she still got promoted.
"I'd say we should turn off our phones just to make sure, but there are too many people in that office who could track us down anyway," she remarked, taking a sip of her own drink. "But at least we can spend the day together."
"We should look into renting a part hall since we know most of the bureau will want to celebrate that," Dani said with a laugh.
She too knew it was wrong to talk about coworkers like this, but she had long stopped caring. Abby had made leaps and bounds with the FBI, getting jobs that others deserved more. Now she was part of SCIU, and Dani really wanted to rip her head off, and shove it up her ass for the things she was doing to the Sanctuary. Even Dani's grandmother, who was a HAP, wanted to inflict pain on Abby.
"They'd probably call me to track you down," she said as she shook her head. "But, staying here is good, and we do have food to eat."
"We probably should. And knowing Rossi, he'll probably be the one to spring for it," she said in amusement.
She really hated it that people gave her crap because they thought that she had gotten her position in the BAU because of her mother when nothing was further from the truth, but someone like Abby got promoted because of who she slept with. And now she was part of that abominable unit out in the Seattle-Old City area, going after people who were only trying to help.
"You're probably right, so I guess it's a good thing that you know where I am," Emily pointed out with a laugh before taking another drink. "Food, drink and friend? Sounds like we don't need to go anywhere at all."
"You gotta love Rossi's generosity!" Dani said with a grin.
She understood being disliked because someone decided they didn't like how she got into the FBI. Yes, she was offered a job with them before she had graduated, but it wasn't a new practice. Besides, she had to go through all the same training, and her first office was in the depths of the basement. Maybe Abby had started out in a similar office, but she was given a huge one because of SCIU.
"And don't forget about the lazy dog in the corner," she laughed as she nodded toward her mutt Bailey, who was sleeping by the floor vent. "But yes, no need to go outside for the rest of the night."
"You really do. Especially since he feels the same way about her that we do. I don't think he likes it when someone gets ahead without actually putting the work and talent in to get there in the first place."
And she understood why. Rossi was self-made - he'd spent countless hours in the BAU, actually helping to build the whole department from what it was originally, and then he'd spent even more writing the books that had become bestsellers. She knew that he expected that others would care just as much, so to see someone sailing through on the coattails of others, and then into a unit that created victims instead of helping them... Yeah, that wasn't going to go over well.
When Dani pointed over to Bailey, Emily laughed. "Of course, we can't forget her. I don't think she'd forgive us," she said just before the oven went off. "Oh. Appetizers."
Getting up, she ran into the kitchen and pulled the tray out, putting everything onto a plate, which she then took back out into the living room.
"Here we go," she said, setting it on the coffee table before tossing one to Bailey. "There you go, girl."
"True! I remember one time she tried to undermined something he did. That did not end well for her," Dani said with a laugh.
She had to admit she was a little nervous the first time she'd met Rossi. Dani had heard so many wonderful things about him, and she really wanted to impress her. Finally, she figured out if she did her job, and did it well, he would respect her.
When the oven went off, she was about to stand and get the food, but Emily was too quick for her. Sitting back on the couch, she smiled when her roommate came out with the food and found herself laughing when Bailey suddenly jumped up to see what she had.
"She's so easy for food," Dani laughed before she took one of the cheese sticks off the plate. She took a bite and nodded. "This is good."
Three years? It must really be difficult to go that long and not be able to spend a holiday together. Do the two of you have something special planned?
A bank. Just as bad, I bet considering everything that's been going on with the world economies. But if your husband is with the government, it sounds like you still know what it's like.

My husband and I are finally home at the same time during the holidays. It hasn't happened in at least three years.

I'm Joan by the way.

It's nice to meet you, Joan. I'm Emily. Since this is D.C., are you also at the beck and call of the government?
