Cassie flops down in the seat opposite Nick, shrugging off her messenger bag and tucking it into the corner for safe-keeping.
"Hello, Nick," she says, like it hasn't been four years since they last spoke. She steals a couple of fries from his plate and shoves them into her mouth. "How you been?" she asks with her mouth full.
He's just about to take another bite of his burger when she appears, necessitating a high noon stare over the top of the burger bun until Cassie looks somewhat settled.
Which is a little unsettling. "Hi, Cassie. I'm fine. Would you like your own fries?" Because what else is he gonna say?
Cassie wipes the grease and the salt from her fingertips and seems to consider the question. "Are you buying?" she finally asks. It's not that she's hungry. It has taken her near three days to find him, and her car (a beat-up old volkswagen) is filled with wrappers and old takeout cartons. But, she could eat. "Because, then, yeah. If you don't mind."
He just keeps staring at her before belatedly setting down the food and blinks twice, just to see if she vanishes in between seconds. When she doesn't, he mutters a 'huh' before lifting an arm to wave down the waitress.
"Thank you," Cassie says automatically. She has some manners after all. The waitress comes and goes and as they wait for Cassie's fries to arrive, Cassie steals another couple of fries from Nick's plate.
"You don't look too happy to see me," she notes. In a gesture that's achingly childish and more insecure than she intended, she chews on her lower lip as she waits for his reply.
"Welcome." It's also automatic. He shifts, leaning back in his chair without taking his eyes off Cassie, and picks up a fry to chew on thoughtfully. When he's done eating it, he finally leans forward again.
"Pop up out of the blue and things get dicey. You in trouble?" Not exactly an answer, but Nick doesn't look unhappy to see her, either. Mostly he just seems worried. Slightly.
