Well, the basis of it is that your soul continually lives, being reborn each time you die. All well and good. However, the actual personality of each reincarnation should die with that particular body. Something... went wrong... and a previous incarnation's personality awoke and, while trying merely to be under the new personality, to fortify it, ended up taking over.
