So we can be reminded to love.

The world comes in pairs, little one. Love and hate. Black and white. Hot and cold. It is an unfortunate reality but the way our world works.

It is cruel though, sir.

It is cruel and wrong. I think it is stupid to hate one another.

Why should things come in pairs?

It is not a matter of if the should, they just do. Perhaps as a reminder.

You would not appreciate love quite as much without knowing how awful hatred feels, right?

There’s cruelty in a lot of things including having too much love. We need both hate and love, good and bad, light and dark; all of us are created to have balance in equal measure of those things. When we have too much of one without the other...we become sick.

What brought about this question?

There is? Why is balance so important? [Her forehead wrinkles up, frown firmly in place.]

How can a person become sick from only that?

I know it is bad and hurts others so I do not like it. I want to know why it is necessary. [She had to remember to be careful about what she said.]

Why? All it does it want to make people hurt each other. How is that supposed to remind someone of love?

I am not sure.

There shouldn't. [Her smile is soft, and sad.] But it's - it's part of life, I guess.

We just have to try and overcome it.

That is what everyone else is saying, miss. [Her own face was serious and a bit unhappy.] I would like to make it go away.

How can you do that?

I want to change that.

I believe that the people who are brave enough to think they can change the world will change the world.

Let us make a pact then, to change the world, you and I will no longer allow ourselves to hate. [Selene held out her hand to shake on it.]

Well - you try to teach something better. Usually, hatred comes from ignorance. People are scared of what they don't understand, and they hate what they fear.

So you show them they don't need to be afraid. And you try to remind yourself that - that they're people, too. More than their hatred.

Have you ever over ate your favourite food? Had it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? After a while you notice you don’t start to feel good. That’s the same when you lose your balance in life.

The most you can do is be mindful of your own self and your own actions.

That is what I would like to do. It does?

I am trying, miss... No one takes me seriously though and instead I am punished. I know they are, but what if both sides hate one another and you are alone?

A little sir, well not really. I have to eat the same thing everyday. [She was confused now. What hey ate did not do that, they had to have it. Could humans become sick like that?]

What about if others around you are hurting one another because of it?

I am not afraid to try because I want to believe that too and so does my brother.

Good, I like that agreement. I am going to hold you to that, all of the other adults want to hate one another. [Her own small digits took hold of her hand and shook it heartily.]

Good. Never be afraid. Never be afraid to try for the things you want in this world.

I've spent most of my long life hating and being angry. Fighting. I have grown tired. [Selene shook her hand and smiled.] I won't let you down, my lady.

Have you been afraid before?

I do not like seeing that, it hurts others. I still want to train so I can be strong enough to make others stop. Don't you still have to fight?

Thank you, miss. I wish the other adults would listen too but they only punish me.

Of course. More often than I would ever admit to anyone but you. Life can be very frightening but the brave get through it.

Only to keep us safe. I don't go looking for the fight anymore.

[He’s very human and doesn’t know a lot about her world. For the moment, he see’s a little kid with some problems.] Don’t like your vegetables, uh? I got vegetables for dinner every day too.

Sweetheart, the thing is a stranger can’t give you a definite solution with your problem…whatever it is. My gut instinct is telling me there’s a whole lot I’m not getting from you. All I can tell you as outsider is unless the law can be involved, or whoever is fighting comes to a peaceable agreement; you’ll have to learn some fights are not your fights. It hurts to stand back and not intervene, sometimes it is the best for everyone including yourself.

Why is that? Were you taught to not show fear too? Well, if you are so old and still living, that would make you brave as well.

I do not either, unless my brother starts it then I have too because we are rivals. [Being a twin was a great deal of work.]

I am sorry, I forgot again. They all do, except Richard. Even Father said soldiers need discipline or they are useless.
