Well, they weren't really. Actually when they first came out there wasn't really 'Goth' yet. There was Punk and Grunge. They sort of combined the two genres into their own and sort of jump started the 'Goth' revolution.
I think that sort of depends I'd think? But I don't think music is something that can fit so neatly into a certain genre all the time. And people, oh people are so funny in their tastes, it's amazing really.
It's a combination, if I had to decide though, which isn't really deciding I guess is it?
Not really. It's kind of wishy-washy. But it's cool. Hipster's sort of the default category nowdays anyway for anything sort of casual that isn't completely a waste of time.
Genre's are funny like that though. So many subcategories that no one uses but they really should. I can't even known the fad because I'm pretty sure hipsters are the only reason I'm making money but there are bands I'll accept into that 'genre' and bands that should never be in there at all. They Might Be Giants is one of those bands.
No of course not. But we all get a tad be defensive about our favorite bands. I mean so long as people are enjoying them I like them but I can't stand it when someone comes into my shop and asks me for 'that new hipster band, Might be Giants or whatever.'
They did, I think that's what really set me off. They've been around since the eighties. Bloody 'ell they could have done a little bit of research into it before they popped round to my shop instead of just going to blockbuster.
For as angry as I was though I was quite civil and I did send them home with some records probably better suited for them.
None of the ones I sent them home with were new, but people have been putting their works on vinyl lately. One of my friends just released his new album on vinyl for me to sell. Which was sorta cool! It is the cool thing to do now-a-days actually. That seems to be the style. Retro, vintage, it's all the rage! But having lived through it personally I'm all set on it myself.

Is music defined by the musician, or is it defined by the people who consume it?

Sounds like they were just dumb kids trying to be hipster. Like that's cool or something.
