Peter had a standing study time with Charlie. They didn't always get a lot of studying done, but they always met. Since it was standing, he didn't knock, just pushed her door open lightly and poked his head inside.
"Hey," then stopped short. There was a new addition to the room. "Looks like you've already got a study buddy. That's cool. I don't feel replaced at all." He was joking, creeping closer to the kitten as he talked.
This was Charlie's favorite part of the day. When it was just her and Peter, pretending to do homework when adults walked by and goofing off when they weren't anywhere near her room. She turned and grinned when he came in, picking up Bones.
"Look what Barton brought home for me from his latest mission." God is she excited about this cat, in her own 'showing enough emotion to show she's pleased' sort of way. She was working on it. Some days, it was probably a pain to get more than a half smile out of her.
The kitten had no problem with being picked up, curling himself around one of Charlie's hands and purring loudly.
"His name is Bones." Because he's frigging skinny as hell. "Also, Peter? You're irreplaceable. Just remember that."
It's good to see her excited about something, anything really. It brings out a smile in Peter. He reaches out to scratch between the cat's ears.
"He's cute." He looks up at Charlie, still scratching the cat's ears. "Yeah? I mean I wasn't really worried, but that's good. I mean, you know. It's good to know."
"We had cats on the farm but they were never indoor cats. Just...wild felines that didn't leave," Charlie said with a small smile. Sometimes she really missed Norma and the farm and considered visiting it, even if Norma was gone and someone else owned it.
Bones purrs, butting his head against Peter's hand. Charlie grins, setting the feline on the desk. "I think he likes you. That's good. It'd be problematic if he didn't."
She hooks her foot around a second chair nearby and pulls it over for Peter.
"Yeah, I spend a lot of time in here." He sits down in the chair she pulls over for him, still scratching the kitten. "I think this is going to work out okay."
And she's just...smiling softly. "Good to hear. I can relax, now." She's quiet for a moment, scooting her chair over and reaching over to scratch behind the cat's ear.
"I think I'd rather play with the cat than do homework, though. That's probably bad."
