[she pats the seat next to her and fumbles with the remote to put the movie on pause. Okay, it took her a few more seconds than necessary but she got it]
Got shown a stack of movies I've missed and trying to catch up on that. How about you?
[still amazed by all this, but impressed by your 'mastery' of it]
[lifts a shoulder, lets it drop] Anything good? I guess Judy Garland isn't really making 'em much any more.
I'm okay. After everything that we've been through, it's easier to take weird stuff like all this in stride. [indicating the scary TECHNOLOGY in the room]
[It goes unsaid, "like nearly everyone else we knew." Steph fiddles with the remote control a little bit]
Crazy, isn't it? Howard would just lose himself in all this or try to make it supposedly better.
[She mostly just wants to know how he's doing because it's been so long since she's seen him and she hugged him so tightly when they brought him in and now...]
I'm not even sure they know how lucky they are to have all this. [she gives a small laugh and tucks her legs under her on the couch cushion.] Remember how we used to go and stand outside the department store becuase they got a new television set that was a whole twelve inches?
[She waves at the big movie-theatre like screen] Now they have this and the picture is so real, I'd swear we're there.
[She misses home, Bucky. It happens often but she doesn't show her teammates. Or SHIELD. But she sees you and she feels a little less homesick when she does]
[brightens, remembering] Yeah, it was magic. They have all this newfangled stuff here. I don't know if they really appreciate it.
...and now I sound like my father.
[I know you're tough, both physically and emotionally. But I can't help remembering my skinny little friend who needed me. I just want you to be all right.]
[covering my face for a moment] Aw, Steph! I was always so darn embarrassed when he did things like that. He chased off Timmy Eckhardt one time and he was only bringing my homework to me because I forgot it.
Eh? -oh, yeah. Sorry.
[sitting down gingerly next to you; I'm delighted to see you but everything's still so weird since I woke up]
[and my arm goes around you automatically; you're not as small and slight compared to me as you were back then, but you're still you, and I need that, too]
[laughs] Kid could run pretty fast when he wanted to. He didn't have the right to pester you like that.
