I didn't say it did, Captain. But you have to agree that until we figure out why the serum is not working, you are vulnerable. [Oh dear, Steve should know he's on thin ice when Peggy started to sound like that. All carefully enunciated words and light tone of voice overlaid with a heavy dose of ice.]
[Oh, he knows he's in trouble with her. But part of him doesn't care. All he's heard for the past few hours is how he's a wasted resource and worthless to the SSR. There'd even been a few hints that he should be shipped back home.]
You didn't have to, Agent Carter. I know what everyone thinks. [Sighing, he snaps his sketchbook closed, a sign of his frustration that he immediately wishes he had been more careful of.] Even if it's not true.
[A dark brow arched ever so slightly when she heard that sigh but she thankfully made no comment on it. Instead, Peggy moved to settle onto the desk next to where Steve was sitting.]
Not everyone things that, Captain. I have no doubt that Howard and the rest of the others will figure out why the serum has become inert all of a sudden and you'll be back to fighting form in no time.
[God bless her, she even managed to sound like she believed that and that she wasn't feeding him platitudes.]
I am in fighting form. Just not the one that everyone wants.
[He appreciates what Howard and his team are doing. The man was working himself to exhaustion to figure out what was wrong and Steve doesn't doubt that Stark will figure it out eventually, but until then...
He tries to smile, but the expression is forced. He's picked up that she seems just as eager as the rest to have Cap back instead of giving the asthmatic soldier a chance to prove himself.]
Physical strength isn't always what's needed to win a battle.
I don't doubt your heart or your courage, Steve. But could you imagine trying to lead your team when you're in this condition? And despite what the others seem to think, I do agree you are just as much use to us in this condition as before.
[Her finger, plain and free of even the slightest hint of polish reached out and tapped him right on the forehead.] You still have that clever mind of yours for one.
[It was Peggy's turn to sigh.] I understand how frustrating this is, Steve. It's not easy to have your value and worth by your outside packaging.
I know you too well. Yeah, we'll have to change up some mission plans, can't rely on you kicking as much behind. But I know you'll still find a way to be there so I'll work with that.
[and I wouldn't want to try to stop you, it's not right]
[Tony hadn't really even given Steve the proverbial 'second glance'. The truth was, Steve was Steve. So when Steve announced it changed nothing while Tony had been reviewing what had happened on the mission, he lifted his head and pushed the glasses back up on his nose. Studying Steve's face, he pushed to his feet after shoving the tablet and paperwork aside.
He'd not let the man get far away from him to begin with, but that was normal. So when he drug Steve into the chair with him and curled up in it, he suddenly grinned from ear to ear.]
[Part of him wants to believe her, but after years of being ignored and then having the respect he's finally earned stripped away in a matter of minutes makes that difficult. And mentioning his supposed inability to lead his team didn't make that any easier.]
I can still lead my team, Agent Carter. This is no different than any of the times I've been injured and couldn't go out in the field.
[His eyes crossed slightly as she tapped his forehead.] I know you understand but...
You realize I'm 4-F again. The only thing that's keeping me here is the paperwork getting 'lost' by one of Howard's assistants. If they send me back then everything Doctor Erskine went through was for nothing.
Steve will pout but it's fine with me XD and let's switch to prose
He knew that this didn't matter to Tony. He was one of the first people in this time who had seen him as Steve instead of Cap. But that didn't mean the rest of SHIELD agreed with Tony. Or with the idea that there was more to Cap tha the poster boy image.
And Steve wasn't exactly poster boy material anymore...
Which was what had led to his frustration and the distraction that had caused him not to notice Tony grabbing him and pulling him into the chair until they were curled up together. Laughing softly, he wrapped an arm around Tony, resting his head on his boyfriend's shoulder. "Should've known you'd think up something good about this."
The last thing on Tony's mind was the ruckus that it would stir up with Shield. Hell, he'd teasingly offer to marry him for his money if he thought Steve wouldn't take offense. The genius knew that Steve didn't want him for any other reason than himself. And why shouldn't he love him for the same reasons?
Arching a brow he tangled long elegant fingers into Steve's blonde hair and carded through it slowly. "When life hands you lemons..." Shrugging just slightly, he pulled Steve closer and kissed into his hair. "I still have you. You're alive. And hey.. for once in my life I'm not the shortest along with Barton."
Grinning lightly, he slipped his fingers under Steve's chin to lift his head. And as soon as possible, he caught those lips in a gentle kiss. "I could actually carry you right now. And hey... I can think of a million positions we can try..." Waggling his brows at Steve, he nuzzled their noses together gently.
[Steve wasn't the only one who suffered from foot in mouth syndrome unfortunately.] That's now how I meant it, Steve.
[At his continued hang dog expression however, the English woman rapidly found her patience with him running out.] Really? I don't recall seeing that stamped on your paperwork, Captain. And your opinion of the SSR must be quite low if you think they'll just boot you out just because you're no longer a human....[She briefly stumbled over her words because she came very close to saying 'human Adonis.] That is to say now that you're no longer as big as you were before.
[It might not have been how she'd meant it but that combined with the comment about no longer being human was enough to prove that Peggy's- Agent Carter's - opinion of him.
He would've preferred being beaten in one of the alleys back home to hearing her say that. Steve knew he'd been called a lab rat or some variation of it and there was talk about what they'd really done to him during the procedure but he hadn't thought anyone would think that of him. Pushing back his chair, he dipped his head in what would pass as a polite nod as he scooped up his sketchbook.]
I've heard them talk when they didn't think I'm around. They're planning on shipping me back home if Howard doesn't figure it out soon. Medical discharge or sending me to that lab they'd been talking about before so they can make the serum work on someone else.
Now if you'll excuse me, ma'am, there's some reports I need to get back to.
[That causes him to grin, but Steve knows he'd be a liability, especially since they didn't know that HYDRA had hit him with to reverse the serum. This doesn't change anything that truly matters, but that doesn't mean that a few things won't have to change.]
Actually, I was figuring you'd take the lead when there's a mission. At least until they figure out
Natasha, I - [For a few seconds, he's at a loss for words, not just because he didn't really understand what had 'worked for her' but because she valued him enough that she'd leave the team if SHIELD discharged him. Especially when he's still not sure of his place in this new time.] Thank you. That means... Thank you.
[I'm stoutly refusing to acknowledge, even in my own mind, that this is a big problem. Yeah, you're not as capable physically. But you do a lot more for us than just physical stuff. Same as pre-serum; you were never valuable as a friend, as a person, purely because of your muscles.]
[I also know that you won't just hurl yourself into battle and cause the rest of us problems, trying to protect you. You're smarter than that. I trust you.]
[shrugs] Sure, that'd be fine. But I know you'll be around, one way or another.
[She shrugged, not one for empty sentiments. She just knew the soldier had value, potential, and felt assured that her threat, should it come to pass, would be weighted enough to make a case.
Tasha came to crouch down in front of Steve and narrowed her eyes in suspicion. ]
A couple of months ago Steve wouldn't have dared something like this. Or even thought of doing it, but it was Tony. Which seemed to be his main reasoning for a lot of the things that he'd done lately. A reason that he was incredibly grateful of.
Making a soft sound at the feeling of those fingers in his hair, he smiled at the kiss, amazed that nothing had really changed because the serum had been inactivated. Even knowing that Tony cared more about him than the gifts the serum had given him, it still surprised Steve that it didn't bother him. He had changed significantly and it took some getting used to. There were still people doing double and triple takes when they saw him.
But Tony didn't seem to think thee was any difference...well, except that Steve probably was now the shortest guy in SHIELD and those suggestions that had Steve blushing brightly. "How about we assume you could carry me and not try it?" Laughing softly at Tony's expression, he brushed his fingers lightly along the back of his boyfriend's neck. "And how're those million positions different than the ones you usually think up?"
[The fact that she moves so that she could meet his eyes levelly instead of forcing him to look up surprises him. It was something that people rarely did. They simply forgot or assumed height meant power. He probably should've known Natasha wouldn't make an assumption like that.]
They told me you had a special skill set. They've went into detail on what you were capable of in the field, but nothing on your background. I probably could've asked Stark to hack your files but I wanted to respect your privacy.
[Then, something clicks into place. When he speaks, he chooses his words carefully.] I know that they've tried to recreate the serum for years.
