A pet? [lets out a clipped manic laugh.]

Funny. But I don't think a pet will fix it.

(Brows furrowing, she shifts a little. Uncomfortable. Perhaps starting to understand why so many avoid him. You know, on those rare occassions when anybody really sees him)

They're good for companionship, right? It's got to be better than living alone, even if you are living alone in a giant mansion.

Besides, a pet would be swallowed by this place. I would hate for a dog or something to get lost in these woods. [A faint smile pulls at his lips but never reaches his eyes.]

(Choosing to ignore that correction, because he creeps her out enough as it is, she just plows ahead)

So what is it, then? And don't say the quiet, because I'm pretty sure a dog could take care of that, too.

Curious sounds a lot better than what some people (ie. Granny) would say.

And there are far worse things to be said about those who would say those things. But I'm not the one to say them.

You're a long way from Granny's. What takes you so far off the beaten path?

Every once in a while a girl just has to get out on her own, you know? (And every once in a while, it was nice to get out. Go somewhere she didn't constantly feel like she was being monitored)

You're the one who's talking about being lonely. Do you want me to go?

Not at all. Please. [He says as he pulls thick black thread from his paisley cuff.]

(Watching him with an appraising eye, she hesitates to respond. Storybrooke is a small town, and there are plenty of rumors about him. Ones that say she ought to turn back now and just head home. People say he's crazy. But she knows how the rumor mill works better than most, there are more than a few about her too. Still, she can't quite make herself move forward, so she stands there, shuffling her feet slightly)

I don't know, it might be better if I left. I've got an early shift at the diner tomorrow.
