Yep. Big mix of a whole bunch. Old religions and folklore and local traditions all mashed together. Only thing all of em agree on is it's pretty damn magic.
For? It isn't for anything... The tree is the wish for eternal life--and there are so many different ways, because there are six billion plus people who all believe, each a little different than eachother. But they all do believe in something, even if it's just in themselves, and all that mental energy... can't help but be magic.
Then why do humans put it up for Christmas if it is not for Christmas? [It was puzzling but, she did understand what she meant by humans wishing to be immortal. Father mentioned that once before he died.]
Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but seems like most people celebrate something this time of year, and as far back as anyone knows we had trees reminding us life will go on, even if our world ends in the dark... [She blinks a bit and then shrugs]
Don't you know what magic is? I thought everyone your age did.
My family does not but I wanted to find out why people thought it was important and what trees are for. What else do individuals celebrate?
So trees mean life? [So many different things to learn. The sentence following that made her small eyebrows knit together, more things to figure out. Adults said many odd things.]
Not really. Magic is supposed to be a figment isn't it? [She met a man who could make candy appear one time and said it was magic but was it really that?]
It's important because once upon a time, people weren't sure the sun would rise and they needed to believe it would. Every wish counted back then. So now... six billion people celebrate the very scary time when The Sun might have forsaken them... and they would have starved in the cold. But mostly they celebrate eachother.
[She's probably not helping. The answers are a bit confusing]
Well, it's born of the imagination, and works through metaphor and subconscious... I guess that makes it a figment. Whatever that means.
Yep. But a lot longer ago than just a long time ago. Way back when! But don't be silly, Nothing is real until we imagine it. Everything came from our dreams--and that's where Magic lives.
I don't mean to confuse you, but it is pretty confusing stuff... I probably shouldn't fill your head with silly things. Your mother might not like that.
[It takes a moment of considering how to approach all this, because it's a whole, huge thing to try to talk to a kid about]
What if... your dreams were real? Or could be real. Every little dream and wish had potential. That's what it's all about. If you could just wish hard enough, those things could happen.
Careful little one... think about that. Everything. And Everyone. The entire world could die if you wish hard enough.... Is that okay? That's magic. That's what magic can do.
Wishes are... the world, bending to one person's desire. Their wish. The world has to change, and to make that wish come true, it might need to re-write everything.
I know people have to die when they are old but.. [It was hard thinking like a human sometimes.] They should not have to die because of others. Isn't that fair to wish?
You are allowed to wish for whatever you want. No one can tell you not to wish for something. You just need to understand the consequences. Sometimes wishes come true.

So it isn't real. Figments means they are made up.

You are confusing me, miss. Is it real or is Mother right?

[Ara pulls a face and crosses her arms.] I do not care what she likes, she is not a good person. Can you tell me the truth?

I know about dreams, I have some too but my family says that sort of stuff is foolish. [Except her brother when they were being nice to each other.]
If my dreams were real I would be bigger and people would not hurt each other. Magic can do that?

[Mother was lying! She knew it!]
Do you have one?

[She sort of wished it had been Mother instead of Father but maybe it was bad to wish that.]
Why would everyone die because I wished they would not hurt each other anymore?
