[Nicholas is smiling as he writes one up. He's no lawyer but he knows what a contract entails. Of course, there is a condition that Cynric will at least answer the less-than-superficial question.
As for the surprise itself, he has no ideas yet. But he'll think of something.]
[Nicky. Not 'Doctor', 'Lancaster' or 'Nicholas'. Nicky.
She liked to call him Nicky. She thought he was charming and cute. She liked the young therapist.
Archie, on the other hand, hadn't made up his mind yet even though he'd been 'talking' to the Diamond for two years give or take. The way he addressed Nicholas, however, was a good indicator of how absent and distracted he was.
Today, he might as well not be here at all. Standing by the window, he stared through the panes at seemingly nothing. What he saw outside was a little girl who had his eyes, waving at him and he almost waved back. Oh, she would love to talk to the therapist, dear little dead Valerie. She would talk until Nicky's ears bled - amongst other things.
Archie was only interested in the doctor's eyes.]
The thing is I don't think I'm depressed. Exhausted, sleep-deprived and a little overworked, yes, but. Being surrounded by dying- [dead] people all day doesn't affect me as much as everybody thinks it does.
[Turning around, the Spade directs his gaze at Nicholas, fixing it on a spot just above the left eyebrow.]
[He offers a pen before leaning back into his seat. He's not much of a talker without being prompted. It would make them complementary to each other if Cynric would but babble on about something more than superficial.]
[Nicholas could only offer a tight-lipped smile at that. He had silently noted being called Nicky. It didn't bother him so much; it was more of an indication of Archibald's state of mind.]
I think you'd only be clinically depressed if you struggle with day-to-day functioning. If you can't get out of bed in the morning most of the time, or can't motivate yourself to go to work or do anything.
Why don't you tell me more about why you think you might be depressed? Maybe we can work it out together.
[He'd just said he didn't think he was, hadn't he? Besides, none of the things Nicholas described fit; quite the opposite actually. Archie didn't spend enough time in his bed to have trouble getting out of it. As for work, well. It was getting harder to stop. He would stay in his lab forever if his research assistants didn't chase him out regularly.]
But I was told I'd be the last person to notice. The children - my wife's children - they think I am. They worry enough about me for me to worry about them.
[A smile that was part sneer surfaced. On some level he cared about his Ashley's children, he supposed, but they were starting to irritate him.]
They attend a couple of psychology courses and think they've unlocked all the mysteries of the human mind.
