Jack had found himself outside of Serenity, and he looked over his shoulder towards the voice. "It depends on the hero. The concept is not exactly that cut and dry. It's the idiot who doesn't think who will die first." He didn't question how he had arrived here, and he will save that for later.
"There are heroes that are very willing to make sacrifices, not just with their lives but the lives of others."
Riddick paused when he considered the man's words and broke out into laughter. "Hell, I have not problem sacrificing the lives of others...prefer it to losing my own any day."
Jack didn't see the man, and he turned himself around to face the location of where those words were coming from. He slid his hand down to where his holster was. "So you're a self-serving prick." He brushed the side of his greatcoat aside, and he just allowed himself to relax as he took in a deep breath.
"I'm thinking of the greater picture, not just saving the skin of myself and my friends." Jack did not forget them, and with something as unpredictable as The Rift he was worried. "And, you're starting to sound like a friend of mine."
He watched the man slowly reach for his gun and smiled as his fingers wrapped around the hilt of his blade that appeared in his grasp. "Everyone is self serving in the end. Trick is to be honest about it up front."
Riddick circled the man slowly carefully watching for him to make a move. "Screw the greater picture, life is simple. Live, struggle, then die. Nothing grander then that is out there."
"I'm not going to deny that part in the end, and even a hero has their own motivations in the end. The ones that deny this are completely full of themselves." Jack just kept his one hand at his side, and he kept an eye on Riddick.
His eye constantly remained on the hilt of the knife that the other man held. "The concept of survival, even if it's on a grander scale can't be that alien to you."
"Been surviving since birth. Survived being strangled with my own umbilical cord, survived every slam they locked me away in, survived being hunted by every merc in the galaxy, survived a dark planet will billions of things with teeth and claws, and even survived having my very soul torn from my body. So yeah, I understand the concept of survival."
[Riddick crouched down for a moment and studied the man for a moment, searching for an area of weakness to exploit.]
Jack tended to keep his immortality to himself, and it was only recent that his team had discovered his little secret. Jack tilted his head, and he stepped back to keep a distance between himself and the other man.
His hand remained close to where he can draw his Webley, but Jack always kept other things up his coat sleeves. "If you want to survive in an empty universe, I'm afraid, that I won't allow for that to happen." He wiggled his fingers, and he stepped back again. "But, you are forgetting those of us who prefer to see things in shades of gray."
His silver eyes burned in the dark as Riddick watched the man step back. He remained silent as he considered the words and finally his gravelly voice echoed out.
"Didn't forget. Just never cared how you saw things, but get in my way and you won't see anything ever again after I cut your eyes out."
He thought of striking hard and fast but the ship was his ticket off the planet, so Riddick slowly moved his hand away from his blade and winked at the other man. There were no more words when he slipped into the darkness and disappeared.

But enough about me...what prompted the original statement if I can ask?

It's hard to believe in myself when nobody else does.
