[ A sigh, a roll of eyes, and somewhat of an annoyed huff escapes the blonde as he shifts, because yeah, they'll argue about this fact until the both of them run out of breath. He knows he's got a lot of pride, knows he's got issues with someone insulting it, and knows he won't stop until the other admits they're wrong - whether it be putting his crew in danger with a life-threatening, seat-of-his-pants move, or a punch to the jaw. ] You shoulda seen this guy, though, Bones. Come on, he was like this big shot anti-Federation jackass who just complained about everything under the sun. If anyone deserved it he did.

[ At the 'no, you're not that good', Jim is suddenly rigid as a board, staring at the man, blue eyes wide. Struck a nerve there, and not with the dermal. He licks his lips and leans back again, not willing to have this fight with another officer, and certainly not his friend of god knows how many years. Bones is good at telling him the truth if anything, doesn't often sugar-coat anything, tells him what he truly thinks. He drops his hand again and just stares, letting the doctor give him the usual speech, and looking a bit like a scolded child in the process. He waits for a break before beginning his protest, sullenly looking away from him. ]

I don't - [ He tries to defend himself, his actions, but god dammit Bones is right in all the worst ways, he knows he's right and that's the part that has him biting back the protests that run through his head that suddenly all seem so childish. 'He was mean to me' is no longer an appropriate reason to bring out the hand to hand combat skills, not when he was taught those at the Academy in order to get himself out of the unfortunate situations that he's required to use defense for. Jim drops his head and shakes it, running a hand over his face before Bones tells him to let him finish his work, and the captain is still again, eyes closed. ]

So what? Am I supposed to just ignore that? [ He grumbles, obviously still with that chip on his shoulder, and maybe Bones is right - trying to prove his maturity by throwing some guy over his shoulder isn't going to do anything for his reputation. ] Just keep drinking a beer and let the asshole berate me until he runs out of breath? Is that the mature thing to do these days?

[ He throws the words out like they're disgusting, and shakes his head again - whoops, not a good thing, managed to knock the dermal regenerator with his nose. He sullenly apologizes and stills again, trying not to squirm too terribly much. ] Sorry. Still think the bastard deserved what he got, and a hell of a lot more. How many times do I have to prove that I can do this, huh? How many people do I have to save, until people stop second-guessing me at every turn? [ He's being emotional, in fact, he's being downright childish and he knows this is the opposite of what he should be, but Bones knows him from the Academy, knows how hard he worked, how hard he works in general to keep his position and to keep his ship. Bones has seen him at his worst, and this is hardly even close. He feels like it's the Kobayashi all over again, him doing what he thinks everyone else wants to see - a man who's managed to overcome the impossible, something he figured the Academy would appreciate.

But he can't seem to get anywhere by it. He keeps doing the impossible, has saved the world - god knows how many times, twice where it's been a very real threat, and countless other times through the peaceful meetings with other races and other species. And he's still second guessed for the simple fact the man before was a fan of his father's. ]

Whatever. [ He bites back the emotional angry outbursts that still are lingering on the surface, deeper wounds to his pride than to his face or shoulder. That's the sort of thing Bones can't fix, and he's not about to ask him to start. ] The guy got what he deserved. Maybe it shouldn't have been from me. But someone needed to shut the guy up.
