What? No [Have a confused look. He'd thought he was quite clear in his appreciation of the old firefly] I was just...hopin' t'meet up wi' some friends before headin' offworld.
It's the most relaxing thing I know. [In face, he's smiling to himself as he casts out. He's sure that his friend here will get the hang of it eventually.]
Look mate, I don't know this 'alliance' your man there's been talking about- [He indicates that large, alarmingly well-armed bloke who'd been questioning him with a tilt of his head. He'd point, but keeping his hands raised seems like a wise choice at this stage] -but I've got nothin' t'do wi' them.
[He hasn't hooked his own fingers yet, or better, he hasn't gotten Bones hooked anywhere either. The doctor will maintain a non too worried air until that happens.]
How goes progress on the ship? [because starting chit chat with Scotty is always bringing the Enterprise up first]
[ Mal looks over his shoulder to Jayne, he knew that he shouldn't have let the untrained ape do the job and he then looks back over to Scotty. He crosses his arms over his his, and the short man was somewhat amusing. ] I'm not sure what to think about you, but you were stickin' that nose of yours somewhere it shouldn't have been.
You just about cost me that job, and I that lil’uniform of yours makes you stand out. What are you?Are you some kinda bounty hunter workin’ for the Feds?
[He spreads his hands helplessly] I don't know what you want t'hear, captain. I can do it quickly or I can do it right. If y'want quickly, there's going t'be some guesswork.
What? No! I'm just... [He shrugs and gives the helplessly resigned smile of a man who has long since given up on expecting anything about his life to make sense] Wrong place, wrong time.
I hear it's goin' well. Course I'd have a better idea if I hadn't been sent on leave for the week [Have a sideways look. He's pretty sure you had a hand in that]
[He huffs out a thoughtful breath, pressing his hands together and regarding the hive of activity that is the engineering decks over them with a distant gaze] There's a few shortcuts we can take safely. If we do best an' worst case thresholds where can, up the safety factors where we cannae... [He seems to be mostly talking to himself. His gaze sharpens on Kirk after a moment and he shrugs] We can do it. No doubt about that. S'just that the less time we have, the more likely it is somethin'll go wrong.
Aye, she took quite the beating [He eyes his own rod thoughtfully, as though wondering how exactly one causes fish to attach to it. So what, you just...sit here and wait for them to bite? That seems like a pretty inefficient way of catching the wee buggers]
I'm no'... [He waves a hand vaguely and shakes his head, looking away. Not with a ten-foot barge pole. He can operate normally if he doesn't think too hard about the whole resignation issue]
[It has surprised McCoy when he'd heard the news of what had happened. Not for the first time he'd been disappointed in Jim. On the other hand, he'd never thought their Captain would have done that...]
For what it's worth, I think you did the right thing then.
[ he looks out over the engineering decks as well, licking his lips, and thinks on this for a moment. ]
I can... try to push it back, time-wise, but ultimately it has to be either before or as he's getting on the ship. Once he's down here we won't be able to hide it, and we need this before we go out to that star. We won't make it out alive without it.
[ a beat. ]
..Unless you think you can do it while we're warping to the star, but that sounds iffy at best.
We'll run some simulations, see how it looks [There's still something distant in his gaze, a calculating edge to his expression] We might be able t'lay some groundwork beforehand; some of it can be made t'look like something else, or just kept back out'a sight. If we aim t'have everythin' set up by the time we leave, that'll leave us the time in warp t'catch any last minute crises that crop up.

I didn't want t'resign [His eyes are fixed on the ripples spreading on the surface of the river] I really thought if I objected strongly enough t'put my career on the line he'd listen. I thought he'd at least stop an' think about it for a second, for christ's sake.
Okay. Okay. That sounds workable. I'll leave it in your capable hands. Just know, Spock's going to bring him down here, and Spock doesn't know anything either. The less either of them know about anything, the better for us in the long run.
[ he lets out an irritable sigh. ]
How do we keep getting these missions? It's like they're trying to see how much we can do before we explode.
[He nods] I'll round up a few quiet an' trustworthy types t'get started with. We'll see what we can come up with.
If I were a cynical sort, I'd say that might well be what they're up to [But obviously he's not saying anything of the sort as that would probably constitute some form of insubordination, and one trip to Delta Vega was quite enough for one lifetime. He'd swear he wasn't this cynical before joining Starfleet]
[Which is a sobering thought actually. Not that he didn't trust Jim as a Captain. Though as a man, perhaps there was still a few things to be worked out.] ...I honestly don't know what he was thinking, except maybe, it was just about Pike then.
Seemed to me like the only choices I had were misery where I was.... or spreading that misery across the stars. Well, I've always had a moderately ambitious ego. Nothing compared to Jim, I'll give you, but I'm sure I make an impression on some.

That's good. Not that I'm actually looking forward to the inevitable, but it'll be nice to see her up and running again.
[He keeps his eyes out on the river, reeling the line in experimentally.]

[It might sound boring, but the waiting is it's own reward. Usually.]
But you seem to have bounced back quick. [The doctor casts a sidelong glance toward Scotty.] No grudges?

Keep me updated, but keep it quiet. I won't be able to come down and check once we're in warp.
