I would hope that you would be in favor in order. After all, a disorderly medical bay is a determinant to both patient and doctor. [ He knew that somewhere deep down inside McCoy had a sense of reason. ]
I can appreciate it, though I don't really put it up on a pedestal. [Life would be even more difficult for McCoy, joining the fleet, if he couldn't handle regulations and rules.]
So, who's the one putting a tick in your ear about the rules then?
It is a simple observation of many of the other crew on board the Enterprise that make a regular habit of breaking rules that are put in place for their safety. [ Spock would find things exceptionally difficult to coupe with if there was no order in life. ] So, no, nobody had put a 'tick' in my ear.
The one I had noticed the most was people bringing food into the science labs. [ And, surely it might end up with the two getting in an argument. ] I have made it explicitly clear that food is not to be brought into the labs.
There are also many other infringements that I have noticed. [ Spock placed his arms behind his back, as he watched the people in the lounge go about their business. ]
[McCoy squints his eyes briefly.] You think that's bad, somehow people seem to think that the entire ship is their own personal amusement park, food goes everywhere.
[It looks like the doctor is squirreling up to start yelling, which usually keeps people pretty far away from their 'discussions' but actually, McCoy is agreeing again with Spock. He hates it when people leave messes in public places.]
[ Spock never did look to seek out an argument with McCoy, and for once it is indeed comforting to know the doctor did see eye-to-eye with him on this topic. ] The problem is of course more than just food. And, it is also the use of the entertainment facilities while they are on duty.
There is a time and a place for everything, and using the holodeck while one should be seeing to it that the Enterprise and the crew are at peak operating levels.
Wait, you're kidding? Who did that? [While it was true that Jim could be a little lax with the rules around here. McCoy hadn't thought that people would be taking advantage of it to that extent.

I mean, obviously, not every rule is the right thing, but generally. Yes, they're there for a reason.

[All in all, they was being remarkably companionable. So it was possible to have a civil conversation with Spock. In theory.]

He was also an incurable gossip.
On the plus side. At least they're bonding.]
