What's the point of that story?

Sometimes stories simply are.

Oh, no. Stories are always going somewhere. It's just hard to see where sometimes.

And sometimes it doesn't matter where they're going. The fun is in the trip.

Sometimes! But even that makes a difference. They still touch minds - and that means they can leave something behind.

Everything that happens to you leaves something behind. For better or worse.

And sometimes it shapes what other things can leave behind. That's when it gets really interesting.

Until eventually trying to figure out where the ideas came from would be madness.

Oh, I wouldn't try to trace it all back. Not through a whole lifetime. Well- maybe someday, but you'd need an awful lot of time.

I have time. My best friend has a time machine, in fact.

I just don't see the point.

There you are. It's not about what you have, it's about what you're prepared to give.

Exactly.

But what else would you rather be doing?

[What could possibly be more interesting?}

Soothing the drums, maybe. Or eating.

Is that a metaphor or are you just a really dedicated musician?

Neither. I have a psychic implant put in my head to torture me.

That's different. Why would someone do that?

It's a long, complicated story.

I've always said that's the best kind.

But the hardest to tell.

Imagine a war in which every soldier on both sides has a time machine.

Then curl into a ball and start whimpering.
