I'm completely cool with that as long as you've got standards when it comes to involving innocent bystanders. Me, I don't give a damn about the law but I hate seeing good people suffer. Half the reason I'm in this business.
Anyway. Right now your mission if you choose to accept it is to come back to my place, drink good beer, eat homemade pie, hang out with a big friendly dog and listen to my supply-run idea.
Okay... [ Mal just stands there and he listens to everything that she is telling him, and all that he can muster is a simple nod. Boy she seems like she likes to talk a lot and Mal was sure he might lose an ear either way.
With a roll of his shoulders and his hands coming to rest at his side, Mal goes to relent. ] I ain't one to turn down free drink and food, and a chance to listen to this job you're offerin'.
I wish I had something to offer, unfortunately I'm out until I hit the next town. I'm not sure I'd go so far to get a meal, but that makes two of us looking for a job.
I still have protein chips and some fruity oatty bars, and ain't none of them worth eatin' for long. I've had a string of nasty luck, so my crew is going to have to get very creative for lots of things.
Yeah, I understand how that goes. I haven't had any offers lately, so I'm wonderin' if nobody is in need of my services.
[She's excited. The opportunity to hire a goddamn spaceship to help her people without dealing with the law is a pretty big deal.]
Good! C'mon! It's right up the fire escape. [And off she goes, clambering toward the rooftop. She has up there what can only be called a squat--a surprisingly well constructed cottage and container garden. A very large, fuzzy black dog is soaking in a kiddie pool near the garden to beat the heat. He looks up and splashes his tail as they arrive.]
I've got a whole crew that tends to over complicate simple matters, so you stickin' around for long or not ain't gonna matter much. [ He starts to think of anything that doesn't sound like he goes looking for trouble, Mal has a strange relationship with it and surely it has to do with what it is that he does for a living.
Mal doesn't scramble to find words nor dodge the bullet when Vash asks him what he does. ] I'll do almost anything if the pay is right, and I ain't about to neither question the morality of it all nor worry if people get killed in the process.
[Vash's own relationship with trouble is special as well, and he certainly does go looking for it, but not quite in the way that Mal does.]
Eh heh, yeah, I guess business is business sometimes. [Mal's statement makes Vash uncomfortable, but if Vash wanted to try and prevent anything he had to bite his tongue for a little while.]
When you've got mouths to feed, a boat that needs fixin', and you take what you can get.
[ Mal is a criminal with a slight sense of honor, but he is still a criminal when one goes to look up the definition. ] That I am. There ain't nothin' better than having a reliable boat to call home and the freedom that comes with the blackness of space.
[There's still something to be said for that, especially considering the scum Vash usually has to deal with on a daily basis. The ones with a code or some semblance of honor are the ones he finds have a chance to do some good.]
Hard to beat that kind of freedom. I haven't been in space in a while, but I remember how big it felt. Almost peaceful.
I'm a bit stuck myself. [ He finally mentions, with Serenity still under going repairs from the fight on Mr. Universe's planet. Mal did well; at least he thought he did good for all it was worth. ] And I miss it, and you're right about it bein' peaceful.
The vastness, the months that you go without setting foot on the soil of another planet. I ain't alone, so that keeps any sort of madness from settlin' in.
That's always a good thing. So you and your crew get along then? [Vash has seen the uglier side of that isolation, but he prefers to leave it in the past. Mal's crew sounds like they might be reasonably nice people, even if Mal says that he's willing to kill for a job. He'll come back around to Mal's situation on the planet in a bit.]
I'd say get along or tolerate one another. [ Mal is short three hands, with Book and Wash dead, and Inara off doing her whoring business, so he was left with Jayne, Zoe, Frye, and the Tams.
It was going to be interesting once he got back up into space again, but still he wasn't alone. ]
Well, if you meant it when a little trouble wouldn't be new, I might consider a trip when your ship is back up and running. I could use a break, and for once those insurance girls wouldn't be able to follow me. [Vash smiles warmly, he misses space a bit and the idea of really disappearing for a while interests him. Mal doesn't strike him as a bad person, though Vash insists on seeing good in people before considering otherwise. Still, if he might help save a life on this little trip, it'd be worth any price.]
[ Mal raises an eyebrow at the mention of insurance girls. ] Seems you got yourself some women trouble to go with the rest of your troubles, and I'm not sure the vastness of space can help you with that.
[ A smile quickly follows the quirk, and Mal extends his hand out to Vash. ] Still, I'm sure I can help you with your troubles, once my boat is spaceworthy again.
[Vash practically blushes at that as he shakes Mal's hand with a nervous laugh.]
Heh, it's not like that really, they're just very persistent. They're pretty harmless aside from showing up unexpectedly. [His nervousness calms down into an otherwise pleasant demeanor.]
A bit of a vacation from it all would be nice though. Let me know when you're ready and I'll be there.
Unexpected visiting can ruin many things! I'd hardly consider these dames to be harmless! [ It's hard to tell if Mal is being serious or not, and he lets go of Vash's hand.
It was when he tries to find an estimate as to when Serenity will be finished, but he knows it will be a long wait either way. ] I'll get in touch with you when she's good to go. I'm gonna tell you a thing; I'd hardly call my life a vacation.

Hey, if you're looking for a place to eat I can show you a little spot nearby before I go. They don't have much but it's better than a Block Meal.
