Chuck scoffed, nose wrinkling slightly in disgust. "The man sacrificed his own goddamn brother and then ran away and hid because he couldn't handle the truth. He betrayed everything he stood for and a whole world full of people who were counting on him. And now he's waltzing on back in here like he didn't let everyone down."
Steve felt sorry for the kid, and slumping back against the wall, he has a sympathetic look on his face. "If he didn't there would be dead people, and I'm very sure he lives with the guilt from the loss."
"Betrayed us? I think the kid deserves a bit of room to grieve, and he's done good by us so far. I'd say let him have a chance to prove himself again, and it isn't as if we have a whole lot of choice."
"A Ranger goes down with his co-pilot." The conviction was strong in Chuck's voice, obvious in the way he set his jaw, teeth clenched almost to grinding.
Scoffing again, Chuck resists the urge to demand what this man knows about the situation; about the Becket Brothers and their final battle against Knifehead. But he bites his tongue. Barely. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one who has to trust the man with your life." How could Chuck trust that, when shit hit the fan, Becket wouldn't leave him and his dad for dead?
Andy tries not to wince at the Ranger's vehemence. He's got no business contradicting him; he's barely got any business talking to him. Rangers are like... Special Forces rock stars. And he's a grunt who isn't even old enough to drink yet.
"That's the one who lost his brother, right? Maybe he just needed some time to grieve." Admittedly, if the Corps needed Becket it reflects poorly on him. But Andy's never met the man. He's trying not to judge.
Steve sees things are no different from the sacrifices even if he spent the majority of his time in special operations. The very motto of, 'No man left behind' is one he lives by, but even sometimes he knows when hard sacrifices need to be made.
Steve turns his head to glance down towards the depths of the hall of the shatterdome to where the Jaegers were being stored. "I've worked with enough men of questionable motives during my time in service, but I was always willing to give them the benefit of the doubt to prove themselves."
He starts to walk off towards Pentecoast's office with his hands at his side. "And, right now we need every person possible to sacrifice themselves for the very good of the human race."

[ Even if he knows it's not true. Plenty of cowards died in the war too. ]
Usually a hero.
