Basically what it boils down to is that people tend to assume the weirdest. Members of the Furry subculture run around in animal costumes for a number of reasons, but the most scandalous, and most interesting to outsiders, reason is sex. So, a lot of people assume that Furries are just into a weird kink, and in turn, a lot of people assume that anyone running around in a dog costume must be a Furry. Who is just doing it for sexual kicks.
...sorry about that. Humanity in general has a stupid streak.
It's no fun to be objectified. [She glances down at her modest pantsuit and enveloping coat; it's a worry for her as well.] I don't think you need to worry about it. Not only are furries relatively rare, but furries who sexualize fursuits are even rarer. People bring it up not because furry culture is popular, but because making fun of furry culture is popular.
[ And it's not that Kenta's a furry, or anything, but he feels like other people who wear animal costumes--fursuits, is that what she called them?--are kindred spirits. They understand him. Probably. Or maybe not since he doesn't enjoy being in the costume in particular, but-- ]
What the hell did furries do to the general populace?
It is. I know where it comes from, but it's inexcusable.
Well, see, here's the thing. Everytime a person encounters something they're not used to, like someone who identifies more with animals than humans, it causes them this little stab of anxiety. They can't help that. It's a leftover human instinct, right? Being a little nervous around the unfamiliar. Except most people, even if they're clumsy about it, they fight the fear. They withhold judgment, they watch what they say and they ask questions before assuming shit. That's what tolerance is.
But then you get people who let the fear win. Maybe they're really ignorant, or they're messed up, or they need to feel better than someone, or they're just plain mean. So they get all nervous around this different person. Some hide it and do quiet things like Internet mockery or voting their fear, and some...act on it.

What, you planning on having some kind of really kinky 'let's kill Ryosuke' sex with me? Because I'd like to have some kind of emergency services available just in case.

Or you're being teased according to stereotypes about Furries, but...same difference really.
[A tiny smile] The Internet especially seems to have forgotten that costume parties and such are still a thing.

[ Cue Kenta's genuine confusion, because he's stupid and uncultured and doesn't really get what the Internet is for other than porn, anyway. ]
