[Clint kisses back, relief that Phil is safe and an overwhelming sense of need to hold him tight and never let go.]

I love you. Don't you dare put me through that again, Coulson.

[Either invite her in or dismiss her. Don't leave her standing by the door.]

I'm not a guard dog.

[She steps into the room and moves to stand across from him. Her body language isn't defensive or remorseful, but it is a little bit uncertain.

He can't seriously expect her to respond to that. She stays quiet, waiting to see if there's anything he'd like to add.

[May looks straight ahead, almost a thousand-yard stare, but her attention follows him while he completes his circuit of the room, closing the door. She knows exactly where he is, every second.

They're dismantling S.H.I.E.L.D., at least above ground. She has no reason to believe that Fury's still alive, but that doesn't declassify her mission. She's already told Phil more than she should have. She knows for a fact that Commander Hill made it through, and regardless of whether Maria's officially retired or not, she expects to hear from her. If anyone can release her from her orders now, from the secrecy, it's the only other senior agent who knew about T.A.H.I.T.I.
]

And I meant what I said. All of it.

[But she knows, he's repeating, that there are limits to what he can believe, and he doesn't believe she's a friend, or that she could do this to him if she cared.

Garrett was right about her, too. He said she'd follow him into the grave, and he meant Coulson, but she can't help thinking it meant Fury, too. Those loyalties aren't meant to conflict, but if they do, she has to be more professionally loyal than personally loyal. She might not like what she is, but she knows what she is, and that's The Cavalry.

She exhales.
]

Fury's reasons... [If she knows, she still won't say.] Maybe they don't justify it. He should have let you go.

You're not the same, but Director Fury would be proud of the choices you've made in the past few days. [With very dark humor:] I wish I could report it.

Took a bit a damage, but nothing that won't heal. I thought I was going to go crazy when the comms went down. When I couldn't hear you, I thought...well I thought the worst.

[She nods, curtly acknowledging that whatever's left of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to go dark and run silent.]

Hand's intel, that's confirmed?

[May sounds unconvinced, and she's not going to pretend otherwise. Victoria is the best they have at piecing their intelligence together, but there's no guarantee that all of her sources are reliable on this.]

If Hill's dead too, it's just me. I'll tell you everything I know. We can talk about you, about why.

[She's openly confirming Maria's involvement. That's not nothing. And it's an if, she's not hiding that part, it's front and center. She doesn't want to get them off to a bad start, with more dishonesty. That said, she won't apologize for doing her job. She still doesn't think it was ever a betrayal.]

I've had your back all along.

I'm sorry, Phil. Betrayal is like a knife to the gut. What about May? Where did she fall in all of this? Who's side is she really on? If ours, is that because you're in control now?

[personal profile] heroarcher 2014-04-11 01:19 am (UTC)(link)

Fuck, I was afraid of that. [Clint starts to pace.] So where does she fall on the chessboard? White or Black?

What?! Holy shit, Phil. You really are in charge, aren't you? [Seeing the look on his face, Clint moves to him and holds him close.] I'm sorry, I know he was your friend.

I'm glad someone else is still loyal. What about you? Tell me you're not going to vanish on me, Phil. I can't take that, I really can't. I'll go with you before I lose you, not when I just got you.

[In light of what Romanoff said publicly at the hearing:]

Nat won't check in. She's gone.

[May realizes too late that she should've used the code name. If Phil can manage to say Hawkeye at a time like this, she should be at least that professional herself. (They have a strange camaraderie in mutual deceit. Natasha's one of the few others beside Phil who uses her name, and she's been known to shorten it to Mel, just to see if it bothers her. May uses 同志 as a private joke and a term of endearment. What it means and what it means to them might be two different things.) Whether all the spying and killing was for a good cause or a bad one is a matter of politics now.

Melinda's expression is carefully neutral. Underneath, maybe not so far down that Phil won't see it, she's worried. She just won't let that worry get the best of her. They need to push forward. She doesn't want to offer any kind of reassurance about Barton, about the people they haven't heard from, that could prove false.

Finally! I didn't think you were ever going to let me play. It's handy I have my uniform and bow with me isn't it? Okay, not going to lie, I was going to follow you anyway, now I don't have to worry about Stealth. I'll keep your niece safe, Phil. Oh, that's something we're going to talk about when this is all over by the way.
