We all have something we prefer to keep hidden from those who don't understand. [ Vastra points a gloved finger to her still visible face through a thin silk veil. ]
Such as my point, do you really think a population of panicky apes is willing to accept a face such as this?
Some of us need one on occasion. [Maybe he's just a veil-wearing sort of person now. Ooh, maybe he could trade the collection of fezzes he'd been squirreling away for some headgear more befitting his new found sense of taste...]
[But she was being all cryptic and metaphorical, wasn't she? Never mind. He looks at her sharply, drawing himself out of his quickly meandering thoughts. Must do something about that, can't just have them wandering off whenever they please.] Makes for a useful disguise every now and then.
[ Vastra's relaxes in a chair with a cup of warm tea in her hand. She lifts it up to her lips and takes a sip. ]
But in my case, there is a rather panicky species that dominates this planet, which would be alarmed by my appearance. Humans.[ She speaks the word human with a bit of bitterness in her voice. ] It is impossible for me not to draw attention.
Yet, humans find this trouble with their own. So, I'm hardly surprised.
[ Vastra looks up to The Doctor with a displeased look on her face. She's willing to accept the changes that come with the Time Lord's regeneration, and perhaps a much more subdued personality is going to be a bit more serious than the last.
There's much to learn about this face, and perhaps she comes to understand how Clara is seeing this man. ] I think you've done a good job over the centuries of wearing yours well, Doctor.
It does, but sometimes it is nice to let one's true colours show.
I'm not so sure that's true about everyone. I mean, everybody has secrets, but there are secrets, and there are secrets, and most people are lucky enough not to have the second one.
Not if you call them names, no. People have a thing about that.
But I get your point, and yeah: no, the whole world wouldn't. But some people would. And I know both of those things from experience.
The faceless mech only acts like he didn't hear. The faintest tilt of his head shows that he was picking up on the words though, brief flickers of data and sound waves bouncing around on the visor]
[ Vastra hisses in surprise at the sight of the large creature before her. She's learned many things from The Doctor, and that not all living beings are of flesh.
And with a face that's hard to read, she steps back just a little to avoid any grabby hands. Her sword is useless, but she's got a few things up her sleeve to use just in case things go south. ]
And such a veil one as yourself wears, machine. That is if all of your species all resemble you.
[He doesn't look interested in grabbing her. The faceless black expanse stares down... before there's a click.
And her image is captured on the screen for a brief moment, before it's stored away for later use. He's never seen a reptile humanoid before. It's interesting, but he's no scientist.
The screen starts to idly scroll through other Cybertronians. Starscream, Megatron, Knock Out, Breakdown... The other officers aboard the Nemesis. He's the only one without a face, it seems.
[ Vastra continues to look up at the screen, and there's a growl at the sound of the 'click'. She doesn't seem to appreciate the photo opt, but there's little if anything she can do about it.
The machine does make her nervous; the coldness that comes from it lacks the warmth of something organic. But, Vastra does her best not to show it. Instead, she does her best to hide her feelings.
And, she looks at all of the other faces on the screen, with curiosity starting to take over fear. ] And those are your friends, yes? I'm sure they do wear their own veils for whatever reason. As I said, we all do. Humanity isn't exactly warm to a face such as this. Nor would it warmly accept one, such as you into its warm embrace.
Apes are such strange creatures. Narrow minded. And dangerous when faced with something they don't understand.
[He also doesn't look interested in accommodating her. Soundwave isn't that warm or cuddly, there's other Cybertronians, even Decepticons, that can show more affection than Soundwave. One of the drawbacks of deleting your emotions for efficiency. He didn't miss them.
He was never much of a people person.
His head just... cocks at the mention of 'friends'. That's a term he's never used before. Colleagues. Sort of. They weren't even really equals. Megatron was too far above him and the rest were just so much nonsense and scrap. Soundwave stood alone from all of that.
He flicked through a few pictures of humans. Jack, Raff... Children. There were a few images of soldiers, but they were generally pictured fleeing. Fleeing in cars, in tanks, in jets and helicopters. Soundwave is pretty used to seeing the backs of soldiers.]
[ Vastra lowers her head and shakes it a little bit. ]
There have been plenty who've traveled with him, and I'm sure countless others who've been taught to fly the TARDIS. Yet you've haven't told me who you are.
[ She remains patient with Donna; she'd never cause a companion of The Doctor's harm. There must be a good reason as to why he allows this perky red head to travel with him. ]
Of course, not, such is true with any sentient being capable of holding secrets or keeping something else hidden from plain sight.
[ Vastra looks Luke over, and she's long since learned to find peace with humanity. Trust them full, nope. She much like them still clings to some of the old ideas of her own people. ]
I have to wonder how true those words of yours are, if I were to walk outside in public with my face exposed.
It depends what you do after you're outside. Like I said: experience. A lot of people will shoot at you, but some people won't. You just have to remember those people. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's important.
