Tarot cards? That's my cousin's schtick.
What, does your cousin actually believe in that stuff?
Lock, stock and barrel. It's kinda the trade of our people. We grew up learning it but she's better at it.
Yeah? Her name's Destiny. You can find her downtown. Can't miss the place. Big sign over the storefront says Medicinal Marijuana. It's one of her other schticks.
Huh. I guess everyone's gotta' have something to believe in.
Well, yeah, but tarot cards are her bread and butter.
Yep. Makes her a lot of money too. Plenty of other believers out there.
Yet she wont read mine. Bad business, if you ask me.
There's people out there that believe in a lot of things. [Herself included, but tarot wasn't really anywhere on that list.]
Yeeeah, well. [He gives a noncommittal shrug of his shoulders. He knows why Destiny won't read Roman's cards but how is he going to tell his friend that?] You don't really believe that stuff anyway, right?
[And that response just makes him want to dig deeper] Maybe I just want to see if she's full of shit, or not.
[No way, Roman. Just let it go.] Depends on the day and the customer.
That's very true. They say there's a sucker born every day, after all.
Exactly. Not that I'm gonna' down what someone believes in, to each their own. [A pause.] Wait, you had said your people? Who exactly are 'your people'?
Romani. Gypsies. [He smirks slightly.] Most people get offended when you use that term, but eh. It's what we are.
[He's certainly not big on letting go] Well why didn't she just make something up, then? I wouldn't have known the difference and we all would have been satisfied.
[Bella stared for a moment, actually keeping her thoughts to herself for once.] I guess I shouldn't be shocked. -- That probably came out wrong. I just didn't think Gypsies or you know, Romani were real. Probably because I've never met one.
"Oh, yes? So... what's your cousin's name, anywho? I mean, she's in the Yellow Pages somewhere, right?" Hannah smiles warmly at the Romani boy, not just because she wants an answer, but just because she's a genuinely warm, kindhearted person.
[Yeah, that's what Peter's afraid of.] Would you have been satisfied though? Especially if none of it came true? Look, you're a Godfrey. Your family is a big deal around here. She didn't want to tell you some bullshit and then end up, like, pissing off your mom or some shit.
[He snickers.] You know Romania is a real country, right? It's near Hungary. Ever heard of Bucharest? It's the capital.
Yeah, she's legit. She might embellish a little for the more gullible customers, but she's good at reading the skeptics and convincing them.
"Her name's Destiny Rumancek and yeah, she's in the Yellow Pages. She's got a shop on Main." Peter smiles back, liking the warmth he sees in her smile.
-- I knew that. You just said most are offended by the term Gypsies and I'm just assuming not everyone from there is one? Or is that like, a wrong assumption?
