What are you doing?

[Still moving one part around to figure out how to fit it into place how she wanted it, Ara did not answer right away. As her brow furrowed up, realization dawned on that mischievous mind of hers and she secured it to the holographic model. Without missing a beat, she finally spoke up.]

Building a new model.

A model of what? Can I help?

I wanted to build a new AI unit but I can't figure out the rest of the design I wanted or how to keep his system from overloading. [She had tried this before but his poor system overloaded when she tried to make him smarter.]

Sure! I suggest moving the third conduit up here, so the port can come over to the side a bit . . .

[Of course, it sure beat being told to study after all. Ara chewed on the suggestion while staring at the partially-constructed model.]

Maybe you are right, I guess we'll see! [With a swipe of her finger she moved said conduit into the new position and locked it into place. Well.. Nothing happened yet but they would see here soon.] Do you know anything about making him smarter? This is a lot harder then a portable scanning tool.

Making them smarter is always hard. You have to make the mind very complex, if you want it to hold anything like a soul.

A soul? [Ara looks over her shoulder at him in confusion.] You need a soul to be smart too? I thought you only had to have a brain?

If something has no awareness, I wouldn't call it smart.

Awareness is not just a brain? The medical textbooks I read says your brain is what makes you, you..

Not really. The brain may hold and shape awareness, but awareness can happen without a brain. And your average laptop, for example, is far too simple to think for itself.

Is that what you mean by a soul then or building a brain like my friend? [Ara cocks her head to the side.] Computers think when we tell them too but it has no awareness.. Can't you program it too?

You can, but it's a difficult process. More than a bit dangerous, too, in more ways than one.
