Oh aye, so will I, my dear.... [Why is she calling an Elf older than DIRT "dear" anyway? Possibly she remembers a little girl she played with once who seems almost-- memorialised within this beautiful creature.]
*The elf regarded the woman with an elegantly arched eyebrow. It had been many years, but she still remembered the stranger. It was hard to forget one who had made things fly before her very eyes, after all!*
Do you find it difficult at times? To meet such obligations?
Oh, most decidedly... I mean, especially when the job requires swallowing my own objections to-- to things like, well-- torture. [And she winces slightly at the very word, as if that mere two-syllabic term had brought to mind some memories she would really rather not recall.] I mean, such as trying to-- extract information out of our enemies, in order to-- to protect our population in general... [She looks vaguely ill at the idea of sitting in on another "interrogation" that resorts to torture to extract the information her superiors need.] And then, of course, there is the fighting, too-- one has to be brave enough to stand up to someone who is wearing a mask, who could in fact, be anyone-- including, very possibly, your own brother, or-- or cousin! Or even the person who taught you how to handle duelling or close-quarter combat.... You just-- never know, really... [And suddenly she has a rather distant look in her eyes, as if imagining her old duelling instructor behind one of the masks she's fought against.]
It must be difficult fighting such an enemy. *And the elf gave her a rather sympathetic look.*
Ours are much... clearer. However, my King desires that we only work to keep out own borders safe. He does not care for those outside our lands.... It troubles me. They grow in strength and I fear we are doing nothing but holding back the tide. One day they may grow beyond our skill... and then what?
