"I think I'm supposed to say something about how breaking the law is wrong and that you should be ashamed that you thought of corrupting a national icon." As he spoke, he projected the all-American earnestness that had been popular in the newsreels. Pausing a beat, he began to grin. "What're you planning, Stark?"
Tony nearly choked on his soda at Steve's all-American voice, and sets his soda down to prevent prefer near-accidents. "Nothing terrible. In fact, it'll probably be educational. And the FAA never came to conclusive ruling on whether or not you need a pilot's license to drive a flying car."
He looks over at Steve and tries not to grin like an evil genius. "Wanna take a road trip?"
He would have felt bad if Tony had choked but since that had been averted, Steve just grins. It's probably wrong to enjoy how people react when he slips into the role he'd played for the newsreels but why shouldn't he have some fun to make up for having people think he's just like the hero in those old comic books? At least Tony knows he really isn't like the image, which makes it even more fun when Steve catches him by surprise with it.
The smile turns from humor to awe as he realizes Tony has a flying car. Like the one he'd seen in the fair. "You really have one that works? I saw one years ago but..." He really needs to stop rambling. "I was disappointed that I never got to see one that really worked. The future should have flying cars."
Okay, he really needs to shut up before Tony starts to think he's weird. Or weirder than normal. "Yeah, I do."
Tony grins at him, enjoying the look on Steve's face. So many people just look at Tony and ask why he'd want to make something or shrug like they just expect him to generate technological miracles. Steve is one of few people who appreciates things anymore, understands the work and the wonder of inventing something. It's a breath of fresh air.
"Yeah, my dad always wanted to work on it, but work got in the way, you know? Investors weren't lining up for that the way they were his other stuff and it never got completed. So I mainlined Red Bull, put on some Battlestar Galactica and got to work with the old blueprints. I had to use my mom's old car but it was so worth it! Anyway, you and I are going to Wisconsin, so pack a lunch. Or don't, diners are like, an integral part of the road trip experience." He shrugs, and holds out a pair of keys to Steve. "I'll let you drive if you want."
