Silly of me. [He reels back a step or two and tries to smile through his obvious embarrassment.] Wasn't paying enough attention. Sorry. Again. [Shut up, Newt.] Ahem.
what decade is this taking place in? :) James has been around since the 1800s
[James chuckles, instantly liking this shy young man.]
And, again, no harm done. Just to show that there are no hard feelings, you must let me buy you a cup of tea. After all, you don't hear many British accents in this part of the world.
((ooc: Excellent question! :3 I'd usually say 1925-ish but I'm also working on a modern!AU for Newt - where things aren't really modern at all because, hello, wizarding world and not much really changes as far as I can tell - so we could go with whichever you prefer! I'm all about convenience when it comes to RP.]
You certainly don't. And everyone else has this strange penchant for coffee that I'm not sure I entirely approve of. [He should object - there are other, more pressing matters he should dedicate his time to, hence his distraction in the first place - but Tina's been encouraging him to be social. Just try it, she says. What's the worst that could happen?] If you could just recommend a good cafe that'd be more than enough. I wouldn't want to take up more of your time...
No, not at all. [He pretends to look firm and takes Newt by the arm.] There's no time wasted where there's a good cup of tea involved.
As for coffee, you can only get proper coffee in Istanbul. Nowhere else is ever worth the effort...
(ooc: darn, I was hoping you had a preference. I've been accused of being too accommodating when it comes to bending to the wants of others, lol. It actually does make a huge difference because of James's personal timeline. He changes immensely over the decades. We can definitely play in a modern AU if you want to practice that. Or, if you like, 1925 works. James was only about 70 in '25 and still "young" and optimistic with the world at his feet. Whereas by the modern era, he's much more pragmatic and worldly. I wouldn't call him cynical, but he's definitely jaded in a lot of ways by the modern era. So I guess it depends on which James you want. If you're open to future threads, we can also set this one in the '20s and have them meet again later in your modern AU...)
Well, in that case... [Newt allows himself to be steered along - not that he has much choice in the matter it seems, though he's not sure that that's entirely a bad thing - but only manages to look James in the eyes for a full three seconds before promptly looking away, focusing on where he's putting his feet instead.] Though I have it on good authority that there's some excellent coffee to by had in Reykjavik. If - if you ever find yourself in that part of the the world, I mean.
((Lol, oh no! I hate making decisions! But, okay, I think I have a compromise but if you hate it you absolutely have to say so we can rectify things accordingly! :) Shall we say this is set in the 20s or 30s - I'm happy to budge it up a bit to where Newt and Tina are already married, since that's already firmly established in his canon - but I'd really love for them to bump into each other again in some sort of future!AU. Since wizarding physiology is supposedly different from Muggles, which is to say they age more slowly - Dumbledore was something like 160 or something throughout the course of the books - it's totally conceivable that two long lived people would meet sometime again. What do you think? :) ))
[James steers him along gently, a bit reminded of his friend Nikola Tesla in the early days before the young man learned English and grew an enormous ego. Always shy and retiring, Nikola had taken considerable coaxing to bring out of his shell. But James has always found such efforts well worth while. The quiet ones always tend to have the most fascinating stories.]
Iceland, you say? I'll have to remember that. And, in turn, I'll highly recommend Istanbul, should you ever be in that part of the world. And everyone should, at least once...
[Depending on where Newt is looking, he may notice that James is wearing something a bit bulky under his suit jacket, and that there are wires and tubes subtly present running against and sometimes disappearing under the skin of his wrists and throat.]
(ooc: that totally works :) so we'll call it the 20s for now and plan on a future AU soon. Sounds like fun. I can see James being a little relieved to have another friend who doesn't age normally -- he has so few -- so he'd always be pleased as punch to encounter Newt again down the road)
Oh, I've already been to Turkey. But I was a little too distracted to find somewhere to have a coffee at the time. [Too busy tracking a pregnant Zilant through some of the country's more treacherous and mountainous regions to stop for refreshments, unfortunately.] Though now I'm considering making a return trip.
[Newt does notice - he's making an effort to look everywhere except James' face, after all, so it'd be difficult not to - and finds himself tracking some of those wires to where they disappear beneath the cuffs of James' clothing or into his skin before promptly shaking himself out of it. It seems to rude to ask, so he doesn't.] You do quite a bit of travelling, then?
[James would be excited by the mention of a Zilant. His organization, the Sanctuary, has quite a few dealings with creatures supposed to be mythological. As it is, he thinks he's talking to a normal man who knows nothing of the secrets the world contains.]
You really should return to Turkey at some point. They have hospitality down to an art-form. It's a pleasure to be greeted like an old friend by complete strangers.
Oh, I travel a fair bit. I work for a private research firm with a sideline in conservation, and the organization needs a public face. Somehow, that happens to be me rather than our founder...
[He's noticed both Newt's refusal to make eye-contact and the subtle attention he's paid to the tubes and wires. He doesn't comment on either. He's used to people either willfully or subconsciously ignoring the machinery that keeps him alive, and he has a friend who's favorite state of existence is invisibility, so he's rather used to both.]
Oh? Right, yes. I expect it would. [Not that Newt has any first hand experience where that's concerned. Most people find him a bit odd and perhaps a little too distracted to offer him more than a single dinner invitation, not that he often accepts those anyway.]
You're involved in conservation? [Newt glances up at James with something like a mild astonishment - his is only an emerging field and it's rare to come across anyone with a similar interest - alight with renewed enthusiasm.] Can I ask what it is you're researching?
[James smiles. Conservation is, indeed a new field. Few enough people have even heard about it. Fewer get genuinely excited about the subject.]
We work in an emerging field called genetics. At its most basic level, that's the heritability of traits. Mendel and his pea plants. On a more advanced level, it's everything that makes an individual their own individual self. Everything from eye colour to personality to skills and abilities. You'd be amazed how many things are governed in whole or in part by what we gained from previous generations...

[James, too, has a British accent, one that manages to be both a bit Welsh and a bit upper-class at the same time.]

What business have you here?
((OOC: Because the Woodland Realm could be in the Forbidden Forest.... right? Ok that's a stretch but I'm bored and crossovers amuse me.))
